A good solid informative trip through the gorge. Recommend this trip to all. An informative talk on how and why the line was built. Why that particular route was chosen. How gold was found in the area and so on. A 41/2 hr roundtrip

Did the morning tour on a fine sunny day in late February.
Friendly staff, so so snacking facilities and an informative commentary.
Two hours out and two hours back at a very sedate pace. Good gorge scenery for about one third of each leg. A half day expended for modest return.

This leaves from the historic railway station and was a very enjoyable trip. Good commentary on the way up with some spectacular site seeing. Nice food available in the dining car. Unfortunately it does not have a viewing car so to take photos without a window you have to stand on the gangways between carriages. I did not enjoy this at all. Very limited space with everyone wanting to get that photo. But we still had a great journey. Would certainly recommend it if you have time. Don’t offer a seniors discount so that was disappointing.

Great photo opportunities out on the viewing 'decks' between carriages. The front and rear carriages were popular with keen snappers as they give the opportunity to capture the train in the view on bends and viaducts. Great commentary on board. We had breakfast before the trip and had water so didn't visit the buffet car, but plenty of people did. Initially baulked at the fee, but it works out as ~$25 per hour, which is good value for a unique experience.

The excursion was extremely well run by volunteers. They made the trip very memorable with humour, information, and service. The volunteers made us feel very welcome. Glasses of water came immediately, and pamphlets and maps were distributed. A glass of fabulous local Pinot Noir arrived mid morning and several top ups ensued! We arrived at the summit to find a lovely local market with tourist stuff to purchase. On the return journey, we were given a delightful lunch box which was yummy (and more pinot!). Tourist items were sold on the train via a trolley pushed by more volunteers. The train stopped at Dunedin station to allow us to wander through and take photos. The whole day was fabulous. The volunteers were excellent.
