The railway is definitely worth a visit if you like railways and haven't been on a few others as you traverse New Zealand. It was unfortunate that we picked a bad day. Firstly the company had run a special morning departure for cruise ship passengers which was late arriving back to Dunedin and consequently delayed our scheduled afternoon departure meaning that we had a early evening arrival back into Dunedin which caused problems for us as part of a coach touring group having a free day.

The worst part was that we had no air conditioning in our carriage on a hot Dunedin day. But, the staff did try and move our passengers into air conditioned ones. Members of our group were disappointed that the cruisers had eaten through the buffet car menu and had to resort to potato crisps when hunger pangs hit.

The views were fine, the on board commentary was appropriate but I am sorry to say that on cruise ship day the afternoon excursion was a major disappointment.

Hi Francis,

Thanks for taking time to write a review.

It is good to hear that you think it is worth the railway is worth a visit. We do our very best to run to a schedule and unfortunately some days there may be slight variations of this, which can happen on days when the cruise ships are not in port as well.

We are sorry that on this particular day we were not able to meet your expected schedule.

Hopefully we might see you again one day to enjoy another of our excursions.

Cheers

Being a vintage train buff, I was very interested in the carriages. They did look very good inside. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The commentary during the ride was excellent. Fascinating experience when thinking about the engineering and building of the line, what a task!
Unfortunately we were only a short train so we were not double headed, which I had been rather hoping to see. Nevertheless a very good trip with lovely scenery seen from a different angle.

My wife and I love to do these touristy/exploration types of train trips, the Taieri Gorge Train trip was on our bucket list and it certainly did not disappoint.
Pre-booking is essential. Ask for seating in the air conditioned coach if you do the trip on a hot summer day - some coaches don't have aircon but windows that do open.
Allow plenty of time before to find parking near the Dunedin Station - the public carpark in St. Andrews road is $4 for all-day but allow 5-10 min walk.
The train trip itself was wonderful with great on board commentary.
The dining cart has a good selection of foods, snacks and drinks - take cash as the eftpos is often "Offline" in remote areas.

A fun day trip on the train celebrating our wedding anniversary.Take note though..parking near the station is a real problem. It took us 40min to find parking,so don't leave it too late! The trip itself is pleasant.Kiwi tourists note no eftpos available on the train-just cash and creditcard.Luckily we had cash.

At first, I thought the price of the trip was a little steep. But it is worth every penny. The upward journey took about 3 hours, and 2 hours down, so it's a pretty good ride. The scenery is magnificent. Blessed with good weather, it was an absolute delight. The commentary was superb, and just the right amount of it. It included lots of historic and engineering info about the line. Our 1937 carriage was spotlessly clean, including the windows. It's great fun to ride on the open spaces between the coaches, and this is encouraged, but hold on tight! I was especially impressed by the courteousness of the staff in the buffet car. Five hours well spent!
