The hotel is centrally located in Dunedin and very close to the city. Overall I found it to be impersonal but were friendly if asked for something. There was no air conditioning in the room. The shower in the bathroom was not very good.
We stayed @ the Kingsgate for 2 nights. We had a view! Perfect location & you can easily walk around this special city. Parking is tricky as this area has steep hills. Staff @ the counter were pleasant but not very helpful (new staff). We were so pleased the one day that we were out all day and came back tired to find our room done up so nicely. Much appreciated.
Easy and quick check in. Room was lovely and spacious, separate bedroom and lounge with a small fridge/jug. Housekeeping was excellent. Location is a few minutes walk from the Octagon, a bit of a climb walking back up, but doable, even though I huffed and puffed a little 🤣. The lift isn’t the fastest, only had to wait once during our 4 night stay. Requested a late check out as my flight to auckland wasn’t until the late afternoon, which was accommodated with a smile. Front desk was friendly and helpful. Would happily stay here again.
The hotel is central but up a steep hill with vertiginous parking & exit. Room clean but basic - shower curtain did not cover the bath area. Charming receptionist took pity on us. For personal reasons we had to eat in hotel. The apology for a dining room was closed. She cooked a lasagne from the bar menu herself. Breakfast was continental self service only. When the dining room was open it was supposed to be where locals ate. I doubt it -choice of main was beef lasagna, vegetarian lasagna. Dessert was ice cream. Hardly exciting. Advance notice of restaurant closures was hidden deep in the website. I know there is a labour crisis but in a university town there must be staff available. New Zealand is not really open for business and this hotel is all too typical.
Decided to check in for the night after 6wks on the road and got upgraded - booked through booking.com and cannot complain. Clean, tidy and reception lady very helpful and friendly. Parked van in one of the designated free parking spots - all good so far !
