What a fantastic place this is! The eco-sanctuary is a very future oriented and interesting place - the 8.7km fence that surrounds the forest keeps out all the predators (rabbits, possums, cats, mice, rats, and stoats) to effectively provide a haven for native animals. During our visit we saw big Takahe, Kereru and many singing tui as well as tiny endangered birds flitting through the trees. We watched jewelled geckos sun themselves on the rocks, and looked for prehistoric Tuatara in their hidey holes. I highly recommend the guided walk through the forest, because you will miss out on an incredible amount of knowledge and sights without a guide! Our guide Joanne was amazing, she could pick out every warble and wing-beat and help our untrained eyes see the wildlife - it was really enjoyable! They are always in need of donations and volunteers, so by visiting you will be helping the many endangered and protected animals that reside there too. The education centre is big and full of great information, snacks and things to buy - after your walk, stop for lunch and try the rabbit pie, it's super delicious! Pack your camera, walking shoes and a bottle of water :)More
Show lessWhat an fabulous place and such good value! Only a short but beautiful drive from Port Chalmers gets you to this hidden treasure. Friendly staff, glorious facilities and amazing wildlife. Spent 3 and1/2 hours there and would have loved to have stayed longer, stunning, cant wait to return.
Orokonui Ecosanctuary is a wonderful place. A truly natural environment in which to discover NZ Native Bird life, Lizards and Fish. A wonderful experience. And the Cafe is very good too.
the Ecosanctuary works so hard to protect and preserve our native species - with little public funding. I encourage everyone to take a visit and enjoy the bush/birds and wildlife setting. Coffee and rabbit pie at the café is also a must!
An excellent guided walk and a beautiful place to spot all sorts of birds & plants. Support such a good cause.
So close to Dunedin, and wow, it feels like you are hours away, not a mere 30 minutes. Beautiful sanctuary to see native NZ wildlife, explore trails and smell the eucalyptus smell from the gum trees!
