Brilliant wildlife tour with very knowledgeable skipper. We saw lots of albatross and fur seals. Other seabirds too. Geology or Taioroa Head is fantastic too.

Great staff, comfortable buses and vessel and wonderful wildlife. We were fortunate to be on the Monarch on a windy damp day...fortunate I say as the albatross were out in numbers flying around the vessel. The skipper gave a very impressive and informative commentary and spoke as though he was flying with them.......then group I was guiding were most impressed. Seals, shags, sea lions and other pelagic birds added to the experience...a great effort Monarch...many thanks.

After our previous visit 6 years ago, two factors prompted our return visit to NZ: re-trek Milford, and repeat the Monarch Albatross cruise; both activities in the absolute first tier of NZ experiences. Captain Buddy and mate Jurgen were inspirational leaders on the Monarch Tour. The up-close encounters with sea-lions, giant petrels, and albatrosses were unforgettable. Exhilarating! Magical! Just do it!

We had a half day 'Wildlife Cruise and Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve' that was really 3 tours in one.
First we had a coach ride from the Monarch office in Dunedin around the bay and up the hills, with a couple of stops to take in the view and to take some photos. Commentary was informative along the way.
Then we had a tour of the Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve to see the most endangered penguin in the world and the great work being done to try to help the species survive. You can see them up close in the 'penguin hospital' and the a short bus ride and walks through trenches to see a pair of yellow eyed penguins in the wild. Note: There were some steep climbs during this walk.
Finally were taken to the Monarch boat and went out to sea to look at cormorants (or shag in NZ), albatros, and a few seals. There was quite a swell which made it really difficult to photgraph these animals. Saw several albertros flying but they can move quickly, so again hard to get on camera.
Then we started the long journey up the esturary to Dunedin which took over an hour. It was calm and relaxing watching the world drift by. A complimentary cup of tea and a hot pie were unexpected but were really great in the fresh evening air.
To sum it up, this tour meant that we saw and learned a lot of things that we would not have experienced on our own.

Seeing the endangered Yellow Eyed Penguins both in the hospital and in the wild was amazing. The commentary to begin with was of the highest quality and the information detailed. Walking through the observation trenches in the hillside presented us with closeup viewing of 2 penguins in the wild. Added to this was a walk around the headland to view a seal colony.

After that we boarded the Monarch to view the Albatross both in the nesting site near the lighthouse and out over the sea at the harbour mouth. It was a marvellous experience added to when a little blue penguin popped up beside the boat. The passion about the location and its wildlife by the captain was evident. This was a highlight of a visit to Dunedin for us.
