Review of Bealey Quarter
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Feb 2019via mobile
We had a repeat two night stay in one of the double rooms. The room was clean when we got there and the bed was comfortable. There isn’t much ventilation in the room so you have to leave the door/window open which causes bugs and noise to come in. At $50 per night for two people the place is an excellent bargain and convenient.

It is a backpacker so there are always kids around. Be prepared and if this is a problem go elsewhere. The staff are also young and do the best they can.

I don’t know what the young guy at the reception does during the night, but I can tell what he doesn’t do at all: noise control. Every room has big windows to the entrance, and the drunk teenagers get together there up to 3 AM and the guy at the reception does nothing about it. I had to go downstairs twice to ask him to do something about it!! Just ridiculous!
The rooms are slightly warmer than a sauna, so we cannot shut the windows to block the sound.
The Asian girl at the reception is also someone not to count with. She might be very productive, but does absolutely nothing for you outside her script. Don’t bother to ask her... kitchen super small for so many people. And always dirty. Always.

Hi Nina,
Thank you for your review and I'm very disappointed to hear my staff did not take any action with the noisy group of people. Please be assured I will be making it very clear to him that that type of behaviour is not to be allowed to continue. He is quite new to the role but that is not an excuse as people have the right to a decent nights sleep.
The kitchen is actually cleaned 4 times a day over the summer, but I agree it doesn't take long to get a bit messy in peak season. There is also a free outdoor BBQ and a restaurant next door with some excellent deals for our guests.
All the best for the rest of your travels,
Regards
Phil

Visited here for 3 nights. They try and pride themselves on customer service and cleanliness going by past reviews and we received neither of those!! The room was not cleaned once during our three night stay, just fresh towels chucked on the bed and they didn’t take away the old dirty towels. Considering there are signs about the environment stating whether you want your towels changed or not, housekeeping clearly didn’t bother to check whether we wanted fresh or not. I think we ended up with 8 towels in our room. No bed making or anything happened and we paid for a private room with private en-suite. Tea and coffee never topped up so I had to go and ask at reception for more. Used cups never cleaned. Not once did we receive a welcome from the reception team ( sorry we got one welcome and that was when checking in). Outside areas need a clean especially near the entrance. Cigarette ends everywhere and empty bottles everywhere even though it’s states on check that no alcohol should be bought back on to the premises.(obviously not enforced).
Room, shower lovely, very very hot room and no air con just a plastic desk fan which wasn’t sufficient on a hot summers evening. Could pay less elsewhere in a motel or hotel.

Hi Neil,
Thanks for taking the time to rate your stay in Christchurch. I appreciate your comments and be assured I do follow up where there are shortcomings. I have already had a talk to the housekeeping crew reminding them of the standards required, so my apologies for any shortcomings over the time of your stay. We have just had a number of new staff join us but that is still no excuse as they were all aware of the standards required. As you can see from other reviews we do normally run a very clean and tidy hostel.
All the very best with the rest of your travels and trust you enjoyed your time in Canterbury.
Cheers
Phil

I book ended my tour of the South Island here. I stayed in a twin en-suite both times.
This is good hostel type accommodation. They have a variety of rooms. I did find the pics on the website to be very honest. It doesn’t look like it was built that long ago, so modern. I was a bit concerned about ‘a hostel’ in my mid 50s thinking I would be the only one amongst rampaging teenage backpackers. Couldn’t have been more unfounded, there’s a real diverse group of ages that use it. It has a nice lively feel.
Check in/out was really easy. The Reception is manned 24 hours a day. The staff all seemed really friendly, always happy to help. They do charge a $20 bond fee, when you check in, which I didn’t quite get my head around. This is returned on check out. They organise regular shuttles to the airport.
The room itself was clean, comfortable and spacious as was the bathroom. There was a kettle, tea/coffee, fridge and hairdryer. My room had huge sliding doors which were handy as it was hot, but they made the rooms really light.
There’s a large communal kitchen, which was well equipped. It did always seem busy though. A nice spot to chat to others. Everyone seemed to take good care of it.
As a modern place the sound insulation was better than all the other places I stayed, I slept very well.
If you’re driving there’s not a lot of parking onsite, however there’s loads of on street (free) parking just outside.
Christchurch was super easy to find your way around, they give you a map when you arrive. The centre was about a 20 minute walk. There’s a pub next door, food was nice and a good selection of beers.

I stayed for 3 nights in December 2018. The place has nice rooms with enough space. The main building has a laundry room, TV room, atm, tours, etc. I printed a couple of documents and it was cheap and very convenient. The bar outside the hostel offers discounts on tap beer for anyone who shows their room key.
Just two downsides: dorms don't have plugs next to beds (at least not for the upper bunk beds) and it is a bit of a walk to get to the CBD. I didn't mind the walk as I like to do it anyway, but it is not close if you want bars and restaurants at your doorstep.
