Great service, all the staff were very nice and very attentive. Menu looks amazing, I had the squid as a starter and it was lovely and soft, would have preferred less moisture and more chorizo. I then had a beef as my main which was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. For dessert I had the affogato and this was a nice way to end the meal. The presentation of the food was lovely and all the flavours were great. Only complaint was once the tables filled up it was very loud and we couldn't hear each other speak, the tables were quite small also, which seems to be the way restaurants are going these days. Overall it was very good.

My husband and I had heard that it was best to make a booking in advance and luckily we did. We dined on Friday, 15 July and the restaurant was almost full at 7.30pm. The greeting upon our arrival was warm and efficient and we were seated promptly.

Our lovely French waitress was so professional and effusive in her service without being intrusive. My husband had the chicken salad for starter and the beef fillet for main. I had the calamari with chickpeas for starter and the venison loin for main. All of our dishes were generous and beautifully seasoned. Both main meals had meat that was melt in the mouth delicious and cooked to perfection. My calamari was tender & tasty so I was glad to have ordered that. The wine list is extensive and you have the whole range from the lower tiers through to the Man O War and Felton Road reds which are stunning.

All in all we loved our experience here and would definitely come back. Yes it's a bit noisy, but I think that adds to the ambience. We would definitely come back for the top notch service & beautiful food.

We had a booking for Sat night last (10th July), overall the night was ok, nothing spectacular but ok.
We felt that we were rushed in and out a bit. Sat down at 7.30 and were gone for 8.30 (this was for a starter, main and desert).
The soup was delicious for a starter, haloumi and broccoli was missing something for a starter, a wee bit bland.
The lamb rack was blue to rare and not medium/rare as requested, but still very tasty,
Service was ok, tables were very close and pushed together and some concerns about a table half over a fire exit.
Expected a bit more after the reviews online, hopefully get the opportunity to eat here again..

It was difficult to get a table in this restaurant - that's usually a good sign.

Four of us arrived at 27 Steps just after 7.30 for dinner midweek. We were five minutes late. We entered the restaurant from the street and a sign informed us the restaurant was upstairs. All four of us agreed it was 25 steps to the restaurant!

The restaurant is long and thin and was absolutely packed out. The very pleasant young man showed us to our table at one end of the restaurant by the window. The tables are quite close together but not so close as to be impersonal. We were offered water and told the waiter would be with us shortly.

The waiter arrived and explained the specials and offered a wine list. He was attentive and professional and friendly too. The friendliness was real and he had the perfect balance of professionalism mixed with charm. We ordered a bottle of red and white. When the wine arrived, the waiter immediately offered white wine glasses too as the table was set with red. An attentive touch. We declined, being happy to use the glasses for both. Whilst we perused the menu we enjoyed the complimentary bread - totally delicuous and we had to excercise restraint not to ask for more.

All four of us chose the special entree dish of scallops. The portion was generous and they were served with a cauliflower puree and crispy bacon. Stunningly delicious. For my main course I chose the Tai Tapu venison tenderloin, fondant celeriac puree, pickled red cabbage, currants & pine nuts, juniper & star anise jus. The venison was cooked to perfection and was so tender a knife wasn't actually needed. One guest chose chargrilled Canterbury beef fillet, bone marrow crust, Akaroa black pudding, bacon & leek champ, shallot, garlic and red wine jus. He was going to lick the plate clean had I not given him a 'don't you dare' glance. Friend three picked a special of lamb rack - she raved about the dish and the forth guest echoed my comments about the venison.

Vegetables appropriate to the mains were included in the price and were delicious and plentiful too.

Three of us succumbed to dessert - all three choices delicious.

The wine list was good with prices to suit most budgets.

27 (or possibly 25) Steps is now in my top 5 Christchurch restaurants and I'm longing to return!
