Most of the city of Christchurch is still in ruins from the two big quakes in 2010 and 1011, I think were the dates; many of the buildings that have been razed are carparks (temporary, I assume) with interesting murals painted on exterior walls as backdrops throughout the city. I suspect artists were invited to contribute. In addition to the murals, there are many art forms created from debris, so walking the city one comes upon new creations amidst the fallen stones and twisted steel. This White Chairs memorial consists of all different types of chairs, including an infant seat in the front row, and represents the number of deaths in the bigger quake (I think). Another interesting facet of the renewal is the wide use of shipping containers. One whole shopping complex (near the Earthquake Museum) consists of such containers, stacked and grouped, that now house enterprises that probably lost their original buildings. A stack of containers is lodged against one of the badly damaged churches: to support that wall? A spirit of renewal and Can Do is felt in the devastated city. Go visit!
I have never been touched so much by a work of art. This memorial to the 185 victims of the Christchurch Earthquake turns that number into actual people. You connect to the victims by realizing they were people of all ages and all walks of life.
Spend some time taking it all in and thus pay your respects to those who died in the earthquake.
Reflecting on events that changed Christchurch forever. Great memorial for those who died in this tragic event.
We stumbled across this - but really makes you think and a great idea. I found the location near to the main devastation poignant
View of the earthquake shttered city was pathetic.
At the same time it was heartening to see the speed with which the city has come out of the turmoil in such an examplery way.
We also saw the beautiful coast line of christchurch .
The reality of the Christchurch earthquake, for those not from there, hits you when you see this. It's a beautiful memorial to those who lost their lives in one of NZs greatest natural disasters.
