On 22 Nov. 2011, a quake hit Christchurch, leaving 185 dead and thousands of buildings destroyed, among them Christchurch Cathedral. It took years to decide on the Cathedral's fate. Now the Victorian Gothic structure is being rebuilt. Rebuilding will take 10 years and cost $100 million, but the building will withstand any future quake, engineers say. Christchurch Cathedral is one of the city's highlights. Nothing can prevent future earthquakes but this icon of the city's identity will be built to last.

In years gone by, the most prominent structure in Christchurch was the Cathedral The Cathedral began constructiton in 1864 and was completd in 1904. It was built in Gothic Revival style by a prominent British architect. For an Anglican congregation "Christchurch" has an auspicious resonance.. The Cathedral became associated with Christchurch. Unfortunately, New Zealand is not known as the "Shakey Isles" for nothing. Following a series of earthquakes that did minor damage, the 2011 eathquake resulted in the partial demolition of the Cahedral. After years of indecision, it was eventually decided in September 2017 that the Cathedral would be rebuilt..Work is expected to commence soon.
