A great Christchurch facility

Review of Merivale Manor
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 22 Jun 2021via mobile
Facing brain surgery at St George’s hospital in Christchurch, my husband and I looked for housing that would be comfortable and within easy walking distance of the hospital and various clinics and labs that we’d frequent before hospitalization. Merivale Manor turned out to be the perfect selection.

We stayed for 3 entire weeks and, during that time, the proprietors were kind enough to let us move within the facility so that we could sample 3 different types of rooms before selecting the one that would be best for my post surgery recovery.

We selected, in the end, the apartments, mainly because we felt that 3 weeks would be a bit long for 2 older people to be in a studio. Plus the apartments have washing and drying machines within each unit and fully equipped kitchens. The facility is in pristine condition and very actively maintained by Matt and Kate.

For a shorter trip, the studio spa would be our choice. It may not look unusual from outside, but it is laid out in a clever way that gives the spacious feeling of a one bedroom unit. The kitchenette is completely adequate, although there are many terrific restaurants close by so you may cook less often than you anticipate. That was our case. Nonetheless, it’s nice to cook up some eggs and toast before a busy day of activity. And the spa bath is a real luxury after day of brain scans, blood draws, doctors’ visits and city walking.

Only five minutes from the Manor is the Merivale Mall which houses an excellent Fresh Choice supermarket and a surprisingly good sushi restaurant. The sushi was a notch above what you might expect in a mall restaurant.

Also just a few minutes away is Indian Zaika, the best Indian restaurant we have visited in years, including a bunch of Michelin-starred ones in London. Try their outstanding chicken tikka (basically boneless skinless chicken tandoori, on the appetizer menu), along with some naan and their chicken biryani. The samosas were also delicious and fun to eat.

Hagley Park and the botanical garden is also within easy walking distance, as is the CBD, plus museums and other attractions.

Bottom line: the cliché, “location, location, location” absolutely applies here. Not only is St. George’s Hospital just a 10 minute walk away, so is Southern Cross Hospital, two branches of Pacific Radiology, and numerous other medical facilities. Being able to walk up and down the street was infinitely less stressful than having to drive through congested traffic.

Room Tip: The apartments have individual parking but it's a tight fit and other guests sometimes blocked...

I had the privilege of an extended stay at the Manor, as a precautionary isolation prior to deploying down to Antarctica. I don't think anyone wants to spend 2 weeks straight in a hotel but the Manor is the place to do it. The rooms are great, and even the more 'basic' rooms are extremely comfortable. The managers, Matt and Kate, are amazing. They were truly accommodating, and went out of their way to make sure the couple of weeks in a hotel felt as homely as possible.

I would highly recommend the manor to anyone, but especially corporate clients who want somewhere comfortable to stay but also appreciate a short chat and some advice on the great local spots.

Room tip: Manor rooms were quite cool, even the west facing room on 36 degree days

A seasoned Antarctic traveler for work, pre-covid travel to the ice was relatively simple. This year though in order to keep the Ross Sea region of Antarctica covid-free, we had a two-week pre-deployment stay in the Merivale Manor. This seemed weird and OTT since NZ was in level 1 at the time – but from stepping foot in the door Kate and Matt were super welcoming, highly professional, and their warmth, care and friendliness set our minds at ease and made for a great stay.

We stayed in main house of the Merivale Manor, the rooms was fantastic and roomy (I was spoiled with the Peacock Suite), very clean and well equipped kitchenettes, the grounds kept immaculate, top balcony perfect for evening drinks. There is a great little library, a nice lounge with coffee machine and comfy couches on the bottom floor, and sufficient little gym. The staff were very friendly and professional, and since we were in managed isolation, we had the luxury of great catered meals.

Kate and Matt really understood what it meant to be away from family and our furry children (pets) so we even got to spend time walking Willow their dog around the perimeter of the property. All in all I thoroughly recommend Merivale Manor and thank Kate, Matt and their team for a great stay!

Room tip: Peacock suite was superb!

A two week stay turned into an undoubtedly the most memorable three weeks of my life. You will fall in love with this place the moment you walk in. The rooms are magnificent and spacious with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The furniture and arrangement gives you peace. Matt and Kate are superb hosts and employ very exciting staff who are super friendly and helpful and know how to make your stay even better. You cannot complain about anything and will leave with a bigger smile.
