There is something I find incredibly calming about walking through a cemetery. I have never found it scary, or morbid, but intriguing as the crumbling, lichen covered headstones hint at a life story, a family, a legacy.
I found this particularly in the Barbadoes street cemetery in Christchurch - as I wandered the well kept lawns, skirting around the beautiful Avon river, I found a familiar name on a headstone. Taking a photo, I was able to research an ancestor none of my family initially knew existed, experiencing my very own "who do you think you are?". Thank you, Barbadoes. I now myself just that little bit better.
Went there with friends, took photos and dressed up in all blacks outfit, smokey eyes make up. It was a great and our photos all are all fabulous.
Damaged in earthquakes, with headstones thrown down, liquefaction etc but still a pleasant and interesting wander.
