Located in a quiet tree lined suburban street about five minutes drive from the city centre. There is no sign out the front, but there is a large metallic gingerbread man figure in the front yard which made the B&B easy to recognise. The house itself is quite different from the others in the street.
We were checked in by the owner Nathan who has an open, friendly and helpful manner.
The house was neat, clean and comfortably furnished, with a few minor unfinished details.
We stayed in a large upstairs room with a balcony. The bed was very comfortable, with clean sheets. One wall of the room is a glass in fill of what seems to be a previous open space overlooking the downstairs kitchen. The curtains over this window/wall are inadequate and the light from the kitchen significantly disturbed my sleep. The noise from breakfast preparation and those enjoying and earlier breakfast than ours was also disturbing.
The bathroom was Ok, but there was no fan to clear the air.
Breakfast was good, but the servings of the cooked breakfast of bacon, one egg, tomato and mushrooms I would not call generous.
The friendly young woman who cooked our breakfast gave us some good advice about where to stop for a picnic lunch on our drive north to Kaikoura
The previously mentioned and seemingly legendary Miki not longer works at Gingerbread Lodge and this may be the reason our stay was average. We expected more for the price paid

After a long journey I arrived at the Gingerbread Lodge and immediately felt at home. Didn't have high expectations, just wanted to relax for 2 days. Nathan welcomed me very friendly. The next morning I met Cindy who made me a great breakfast and had a nice chat with her as well. It is really a home away from home. The staff is prepared to help you with anything, you just have to ask. Oh and the wifi works excellent here, was able to use it on 3 devices at the same time.

My wife and I stayed 2 nights. Was the most entertaining 2 nights of our tour of New Zealand being in a homely environment, we were more than happy with our stay there. The wife slept well and enjoyed the electric blanket at night, liking the New Zealand open plan kitchen too :). Location is good for the city, nice quiet neighbourhood.

Overall enjoyed our two nights there, Nathan as previously mentioned being a fun guy to chat too. Breakfast was more than enough for us, cooked and cereals as well. Staying here felt like home after stopping in Motels that were more expensive for less, would come again if back in Christchurch.
