A very warm and helpful welcome. A large room with a nice seating area by the front window, a small dining table and a kitchenette hidden behind louvred doors at the back. A soft, comfortable bed. Bathroom with large effective shower. A couple of seats and table outside at the front of the room are a typical New Zealand motel setup. The upstairs rooms appeared to have a nicer outdoor space. Bedside tables with good lighting and electrical sockets. Good WiFi and TV with 5 Sky Sports channels. British football fans will be disappointed as EPL games are no longer available on Sky in New Zealand.
The kitchenette has a small fridge and a large microwave along with all the glasses, plates and utensils you will need, including good wine glasses. Situated at the Hagley Park end of Bealey Ave, it is an easy twenty minute walk to Cathedral Square at the centre of the city via Victoria Square. Note, the traffic on Bealey Ave can be quite noisy, particularly on a Saturday night.
Getting Around
Christchurch is now well on the way to being remodelled after the earthquake of 2011. Victoria Square has been redeveloped and the bars and restaurants looking out on the Avon River around the Bridge of Remembrance do a roaring trade on a Saturday afternoon. In fact the areas around the lovely Avon, complete with English style punts, are becoming the heart of the new Christchurch.
Although the tram network has been expanded around the central city this is more for tourist use rather than practical transport and the bus network around Christchurch is still limited. So if you want to venture out from the central city you will need a car. Apex is a good budget option with older vehicles. Parking is not plentiful in Central Christchurch and can be expensive so during the working week it is best to leave your car at the motel and walk unless you are going to a supermarket or shopping centre that has free parking. The central city is compact, a thirty minute walk from the Bealey Ave side to the Moorehouse Ave side. There is a brand new New World supermarket on the corner of Durham Street and Moorehouse Ave, about a thirty minute walk or a five minute drive from the motel. It has a great selection of gourmet foods and fantastic New Zealand wines.
