Very Good Value for the Location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 Nov 2019
A very warm and helpful welcome. A large room with a nice seating area by the front window, a small dining table and a kitchenette hidden behind louvred doors at the back. A soft, comfortable bed. Bathroom with large effective shower. A couple of seats and table outside at the front of the room are a typical New Zealand motel setup. The upstairs rooms appeared to have a nicer outdoor space. Bedside tables with good lighting and electrical sockets. Good WiFi and TV with 5 Sky Sports channels. British football fans will be disappointed as EPL games are no longer available on Sky in New Zealand.

The kitchenette has a small fridge and a large microwave along with all the glasses, plates and utensils you will need, including good wine glasses. Situated at the Hagley Park end of Bealey Ave, it is an easy twenty minute walk to Cathedral Square at the centre of the city via Victoria Square. Note, the traffic on Bealey Ave can be quite noisy, particularly on a Saturday night.

Getting Around
Christchurch is now well on the way to being remodelled after the earthquake of 2011. Victoria Square has been redeveloped and the bars and restaurants looking out on the Avon River around the Bridge of Remembrance do a roaring trade on a Saturday afternoon. In fact the areas around the lovely Avon, complete with English style punts, are becoming the heart of the new Christchurch.

Although the tram network has been expanded around the central city this is more for tourist use rather than practical transport and the bus network around Christchurch is still limited. So if you want to venture out from the central city you will need a car. Apex is a good budget option with older vehicles. Parking is not plentiful in Central Christchurch and can be expensive so during the working week it is best to leave your car at the motel and walk unless you are going to a supermarket or shopping centre that has free parking. The central city is compact, a thirty minute walk from the Bealey Ave side to the Moorehouse Ave side. There is a brand new New World supermarket on the corner of Durham Street and Moorehouse Ave, about a thirty minute walk or a five minute drive from the motel. It has a great selection of gourmet foods and fantastic New Zealand wines.

This is a motor lodge, fairly central to the old city centre (15 minute walk). It is scrupulously clean in all regards. It has all the facilities you would expect, including wifi.
The gardens are simple, pretty and well maintained. The rooms are fresh and well appointed.
The best aspect are the hosts. Grant and his wife are absolutely superb. Nothing is a bother to him. As just one small example I left my phone charging lead behind. Grant took the time to follow us up to the car hire place, just to ensure that it was returned. That is more than customer service, it's just represents the people they are.

I got a room here last minute. I called the owner to check on a baby crib prior to booking and confirmed one was available. By the time we arrived (myself and two children) the heater was on, a cot in the room and plenty of bedding for the cot. The owner was extremely welcoming and friendly, one of the best hosts I've come across in a Motel in NZ.

The room was a 1 bedroom which contained a Queen and single bed. The room had a spa bath and a small kitchenette which had everything I needed to heat up and feed the baby. As for my son and I, we arranged Uber Eats.!

The room was clean and tidy and everything was in working order. There were two TVs in the unit, one in the living area and 1 in the bedroom. They had freeview and selection of premium sky channels including Movies and Sport.

We had to leave very early in the morning to travel home to Queenstown and my only criticism would be that I couldn't find a box to drop the key, after hours. Maybe if I had told the owner then maybe he would have given me arrangements?? I ended up leaving the key in the unit.

One final thing, my crawling baby took some plastic things off the blinds that cover the doors, as much as I tried I couldn't figure out how the went back on. I do apologise, I'm sure if you know what your doing it would take 1 minute to do.

A wonderful stay and the top of my list of places to stay in future.

We recently moved to this motel from another one we stayed in. Best thing we did, we've been here several times now and just love the place. Owners are true kiwi's, warm and friendly, with a heap of knowledge about what to see and where to go for great
meals. No noise rooms so great sleep. We take our two dogs, so plenty of room. Great place

The rooms are clean and spacious and the kitchen is really well-equipped and the owners were so friendly and helpful with advice about where to go and where to eat. It was a short but sweet stay and I would definitely recommend it. About a twenty minute walk to the centre but very do-able
