Fantastic Hotel

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Apr 2020
While in lockdown in New Zealand we stayed here for two weeks. All the hotel staff were very helpfulll and polite. The food was good and served to our room at no extra charge. Indeed the hotel helped out with the costs by reducing the room rate and giving a discount on all food and drink.

We were stuck here during Lock Down for 3 weeks the hotel and ALL the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. We were up graded 3 times during our stay and our final room was a garden room with patio doors and outside seating right near the hotel garden. There were about 40 guests mostly Brits and they could not do enough for us all. The room rate was reduced and a discount was given off room service food as the restaurant was closed. Beds and towels were changed often with little cheery notes left by the staff for you. Jason and the kitchen staff were excellent offering daily specials for dinner, they even did a quiz for a few days. The hotel is opposite a beautiful 200 acre park with the Mona Vale park around the corner which was very pretty with the River Avon running through the middle. All in all we could not have had a better place to stay during Lock Down. Thank You to all the staff.

We had booked an accessible room for three nights. The receptionist who serviced us was not friendly at all saying "we had to wait while she signed in because she had just started her shift." I ended up having to sit down. Then I noticed she had to go & get someone to help her. Only to find out there was no accessible room available for our first night but they could move us the next day. Not good enough for someone with an unpredictable disability (M.S.) The room service was excellent but not a lot of choices. The Bar was in a nice setting, shame the service & food was not good. Our cutlery was given to another table who question the waiter. I had the seafood that was greasy & overcooked. We were locked out of our room on our last night. Not a good start, bad in between then to finish was the last straw for me.

If you ever stayed at any of DoubleTree hotels elsewhere, you should know what to expect: basic comfort with some elements of luxury and usually very good location. This one offers exactly that with one exception. It feels really outdated and in desperate need of renovation/refurbishing. Gardens are beautiful, and bedding is extremely comfortable.
Also, rooms are air conditioned and parking is on site and free. Staying there for one night after exhausting flight from US seemed to be a good choice, but I don’t think I’d want to spend there more than maybe a couple of nights.

Really well positioned on the edge of a park but it all felt distinctly.....average. The hotel could do with a refresh and there is an element of the whole place feeling like a grand motel rather than a chateau. Couldn't fault the staff who were kind, courteous and helpful. However, we had booked this as a 'treat' to finish our 3 week stay in New Zealand but left with a sense of being underwhelmed and a little disappointed.

We stayed here at the start of our 4 weeks in NZ - just the one night but it made a very good impression of what came to be the norm - warm, friendly welcomes, smiling staff and great customer service. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived so we were directed to the Rose Garden where we enjoyed a complimentary drink in the warm sunshine while listening to two very good local musicians. In all the excitement of seeing the sun in a clear blue sky (it had been a long time!), I managed to knock my glass of wine over - within seconds it was replaced with a big smile - again no charge. The room was lovely and spacious. The hotel is adjacent to Hagley park - a short walk through it and we arrived at our car hire the following morning while reception stowed our luggage. Would definitely stay here again.
