Fantastic Experience

Review of Hotel Montreal
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Sept 2024
On arriving at the hotel the doors were opened by a very friendly receptionist. Check in was quick and we were lots of helpful information to make our stay enjoyable.

We stayed in the family suite, which we absolutely loved. The room was very spacious and very clean. The linen, towels and robes were very luxurious and the kitchen was very well equipped. We loved that we could sit outside on the balcony too. Such a bonus in a city hotel.

We enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant. The wait staff were very efficient and friendly. The coffee was excellent. We had the eggs and fresh fruit and yoghurt and both meals were presented beautifully and tasted amazing. Although we sat inside, there is a large courtyard with a outdoor fire. This would be a fantastic space to enjoy a drink and an evening meal in the sun. We will definitely be back!

We loved this hotel. It was the best place we stayed in our NZ holiday. Spacious, well appointed rooms. Easy and free parking. Great bar and restaurant downstairs. Handy location and comfy bed! Everything you want in a home away from home I say.
Highly recommend.

Room tip: Don’t stress about parking, it’s free onsite.

Not the first time we have stayed at The Hotel Montreal, and certainly won't be the last. As always they exceeded our expectations and we were made to feel very special from the moment we walked in the door, the staff were amazing, the food was phenomenal and the rooms incredible, such an oasis in the centre of Christchurch, well done !

Room tip: Relax and enjoy, and eat at the hotel the restaurant is fantastic.

We're not usually impressed but wow... What a fantastic hotel. Things that made this hotel great was the warm and welcoming staff upon arrival and throughout our stay.

Then checking into the room was even a bigger surprise. The photos on the site don't do it justice. Sure the tables and chairs have been worn in and have a few scuff marks but it did not detract from our stay here.

We stayed in the Junior Suite in room 306. This suite faces Montreal Street and is offset by a small balcony with artificial grass which we did not utilise. Don't let this put you off though, as the heavy and velvet type curtains isolated not only the street sound but kept the whole suite warm. I do recommend earplugs if you're a light sleeper like myself but my wife did not hear the street noise.

Now the king size bed is essentially two king singles pushed together which were exactly like the bed I have at home. It was plush and offered 4 soft pillows and 2 harder European pillows. There is a small tv that folds out from the wall which allows you to screencast to it.

The bathroom is adequate for all your needs with a double vanity, a shower with a detachable nozzle and an overhead shower. The toilet is not a softclose toilet. The amenities for the bathroom are great as you do not need to bring your own bodywash, shampoo and conditioner. You'll find plenty of towels and your bathrobes here.

The lounge area consists of a 3seater (beware that the left and right seats have almost no cushioning), a single old style recliner with a nice footrest, an over-arcing lamp and a large tv. You can screencast to the tv but there isn't much to watch. Behind the 3seater is ample storage for all your clothes and luggage - the far-right cupboard contains an ironing board, iron and slippers for use. There is a safe in the top-left cupboard but we didn't utilise that at all.

The kitchenette is precisely that. There is no facility to cook with but there is a coffee machine, kettle and microwave. The bar fridge holds most of the mini-bar items but still had some room for our items. The tap was a bit wonky but I am unsure if that was by design as it kept shifting at an angle. My only gripe is that I wish they had mugs instead of two small cups and saucers for coffee, tea, etc.

There is a round two seater dining table.

Additional Info:
- Parking is on site and is accessed from Kilmore Street as opposed to Montreal Street. They're both one way streets.
- There was no in-room iPad. We did not ask about it as we had our own devices to use.
- Wifi connection was good for streaming services.
- I liked that there was an option to use the stairs as opposed to the lift.
- There are umbrellas available to use just near where concierge is located.
- The bar and restaurant does great service, food and wine. There will be an associated review of this.
- There was a light switch in our suite that consisted of one light switch controlling all the lights but the other three did nothing when flicked on or off. So we couldn't control the lighting for the rooms individually with the exception of the bathroom and kitchen.

Room tip: Bring earplugs and a sleep mask. You can sometimes hear the trucks going by in the morning. The sleep mask will help with the lights

This hotel is a total gem - great location, free carparking, and super well sound-proofed so you'll get a great sleep. We stayed in a Junior Suite which was massive, and very comfortable. Staff were all wonderfully welcoming and friendly, and we always got a warm smile each time we passed through reception. It's an easy walk to cafes, restaurants, the Avon River, Riverside Markets and Cashel Mall.

Friendly, Accommodating and Very Comfortable
Junior suite (×2) $242 per day

We had a perfect 5 day stay at Hotel Montreal Christchurch.
Initially, there was an issue with performing our own laundry as per TripAdvisor. The hotel manager was very responsive and took full accountability for the TripAdvisor hotel amenity description.
The hotel is very well appointed and located centrally within the Christchurch cbd.
Very well-appointed bar, lovely restaurant, very comfortable and spacious suites, great staff and professional management.
The king bed (two king singles) were very comfortable separately, but not so great when slept on side-on.
The bathroom was spacious and very well laid out.
The kitchen area, albiet small was functional and well appointed.
The lounge area was huge and very comfortable. The single television had to be swung around to be viewed from the bed or lounge. Channels were limited to free to air with casting of our Australian tv channel apps not available due to geoblocking restrictions.
Overall, we had an awesome stay with Hotel Montreal Christchurch, we would definitely stay here again when being back in Christchurch.

Room tip: No self-serve laundry - dry cleaning only.
