Not great, but staff is a highlight

This place looks a lot worse than the photos. It’s a true motel in every sense of the word. I think their photos were taken when the place first debuted. I unfortunately struggled to find nicer places to stay. The self-serve laundry facilities (2 washers and 2 dryers) weren’t enough since there was a queue after us. The dryer didn’t dry and would require at least 3+ cycles for one load of clothes to properly dry. Keep in mind each load is $4. So laundry is quite expensive if you factor in the multiple drying cycles….

Parking is tight and if you’re the last in at night you will need to park across the street at the church or street parking.

The front desk staff was great and had a positive attitude, I really liked them, and they were the best part of the stay.

The place was cheap so I suppose for less than $100 USD a night I can’t complain too much for a quick stopover on a road trip.

The hotel we stayed at in Blenheim was excellent. The staff at every contact point were helpful, knowledgeable and very professional. Our room was comfortable, airy, very clean and well appointed. The food was better than at any hotel we have stayed while in NZ. It was in a perfect position to explore the very attractive town centre and the amazing choice of wineries, (hire bikes, don’t drive). Thanks for a happy visit to a lovely part of New Zealand.

Super comfy bed, room clean and tidy - very quick room service delivery - Great buffet breakfast, talking with locals, they recommend the Savvy restaurant as well! Pool looked invititing but weather not!

Good location within walking distance of town centre and a short drive away from the vineyards and warbird museum.

Hotel is a similar style to a Novotel or Casa 400 albeit smaller in size. We stayed on the third floor in a superior king room, it was spacious, bed was comfortable and room was well equipped. Only issue was one of the electric window blinds was not working which made things a little tricky. The room was clean and well maintained overall. One other thing to note is that there is an extractor fan on the roof above the rooms this comes on at around 0700 and it’s very noisy at the start and then produces a loud hum in your room until it goes off about 2100.

We ate in the restaurant, the dinner menu was not extensive but the meals we had were very good and the service was excellent, shout out to Sarah and Danah. Unfortunately the breakfast experience wasn’t great we arrived towards the end of breakfast and you were faced with limited buffet options even if there was still 30-45 minutes left, hot food was looking dried out and tired and wasn’t refreshed. It has to be said the staff were more interested in setting lunch service and well before the end of breakfast things are being turned off and food taken away. Best advice is don’t lay-in! This said we would still stay here again.

We are pleased to hear that on the whole you enjoyed your stay: my apologies we let you down at breakfast time, your comments have been taken on board and I will take some action with our team. When the buffet needs to come in they should have actively offered you food cooked to order and I am sorry this did not happen.
Regarding the electric blind in your room, it sounds like the battery may have gone flat: hopefully you mentioned that to one of the team so we could replace it.
Lovely to read that you enjoyed your time in Marlborough, and I will pas on your compliments to Sarah and Danah.

Excellent hotel. Rooms were spacious and comfortable. Staff were extremely helpful, courteous and good humoured.
We really enjoyed the vineyard tour and Picton cruise with seafood and BBQ organised by Marlborough Tours.

We stayed 3 nights from 16-19 Nov. It was a woeful experience. They position themselves as a 4 star hotel with prices to match so that is the context of this review:

On checking in, we informed Reception that the safe deposit box in our Room 308 was not working. The housekeeper came to check and didn’t have a clue how to even operate it, let alone be able to fix it; this was followed by someone from Reception who also claimed defeat. We told him that it required a battery change. But no, it couldn’t be done as the maintenance man had left for the day (5 pm). It was fixed the following day and yes, it was a battery change.

Next morning, (17th at 7.30 am), we went down for breakfast. They had run out of fresh fruit (seriously??!), run out of mushrooms- only sauce in the tray; yoghurt bowl needed replenishing. The serving staff were disinterested apart from telling me that the chef had cut three lots of fruit and they had run out!; I spoke to a lady in reception (Caroline) who replenished the yoghurt but not much else;
When we returned from Abel Tasman after a long day, that evening (17th), I had to wash out the coffee dregs in the cafetière as housekeeping had just left it there from the previous night; and their vacuuming was pretty much hit and miss.

And finally, on 18th before we set out to do some sightseeing and wine tastings, I left the card for Housekeeping to change the sheets (after checking with housekeeping that leaving the card meant a change of sheets). I even told Caroline in reception that the room had not been cleaned around mid-day. Her attitude was that it would be done even though they appeared to have finished on our floor. Well, the sheets were not changed. I notified reception at 6 pm or thereabouts but it was apparently too late to do anything!

Only positives were Krishna and Ayan who were polite and courteous.

So in summary, we had high expectations but it was an utterly, utterly disappointing stay with complete disinterest or passion from the staff who are supposedly warm and genuinely friendly. We didn’t see any of this warm hospitality! Truly failed on service!

Room tip: Don’t stay there!

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate all critique and use this constructively. My apologies again that we missed the mark on a number of aspects during your stay, as mentioned in our email correspondence on these issues.

Specifically:
* As advised our maintenance team member works 7.30am-4pm and had finished before we were aware of the issue with your safe. He fixed it promptly the next day and we have since trained some afternoon staff to trouble shoot here should a similar issue arise another time.
* I have reminded our Housekeeping team to be vigilant in checking for dirty glass/crockery when servicing rooms to avoid missing items such as the plunger, and t be more attentive with vacuuming.
* I am sorry that on the first morning you had breakfast with us that a large group had just been through and a number of items on the buffet had run out. We did go through an unusually large amount of fresh fruit that day and were caught short.
* As mentioned in my email, we service rooms only after incoming rooms have been cleaned so we can ensure they are ready for 2pm or sometimes earlier. Apologies that you perhaps hoped to have it serviced before 12.30pm. The "housekeeping card" you placed on the bed is there for our guests when they want us to leave the sheets unchanged, it is one of the sustainable practices many of our guests appreciate. You mentioned you thought the card was confusing with a double negative, I am sorry the wording caused you to misunderstand the intent of the card.

And finally I apologise that you found a few of our team members to not be warm and friendly. Your comments serve as a reminder to all of our team to always look after our guests with care and attention. Scenic Hotel Marlborough was named the 8th best hotel in NZ based on Trip Advisor's Travellers Choice awards 2023, so I know our team are better than this and we will work on this aspect again with those few team members that let you down.

Again my apologies we disappointed you: this is the never the aim and we are very sorry.
