Owner description: Omaka Avation Heritage Centre presents the outstanding Knights of the Sky exhibition, featuring Sir Peter Jackson's own collection of World War One aircraft and artifacts. The story of aviation, its development and the men that flew them, is brought to life in sensational sets created by the internationally acclaimed talent of WingNut Films and Weta Workshop. The aircraft are a unique mix of originals and replicas, some of which are flyable and/or can only be seen at Omaka including the Caproni CA.22. The Centre boasts an extensive collection of memorabilia and these are divided into two areas, one devoted to the Allies and the other to the Central Powers. The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is extremely privileged to be the caretakers of these historical treasures, which include personal items of Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary Red Baron, top scoring Allied ace Frenchman Rene Fonck, top scroring American ace Eddie Rickenbacker, Germany's Ernst Udet ranked second only to Richtohfen when WW1 ended and the infamous Herman Goering. The Knights of the Sky Exhibition is a display like no other and you don't have to be an aviation enthusiast to enjoy it!

“What a great collection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2017

I found out about the aviation museum from another friends visit in the same week. What a wonderful surprise. The collection, the settings, the history on display was wonderful. The 'sets' that have been designed around the planes offer a sense of historical context and are of exceptional quality.
We did both WWI and WWII areas and it was worth it. We probably left it too late in the afternoon as the two hours we spent there wasn't enough time.
The guides are there to have a chat to and they are knowledgeable and have interesting information to provide.
This is truly a great museum with some wonderful displays and is worth a visit.

“Peter Jackson has done it again!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2017

We took the combo option with WWI & WWII aeroplanes and memorabilia. This has to be the finest display of WWI aircraft anywhere. We don't hear very much about the Russian air battles in WWII but here there were Russian aircraft on display with a full account of the battle for Moscow and the destruction of Leningrad. A simulated video display of the bombing of Stalingrad is awesome!

This was such an interesting place to visit. We only did the WW1 museum -saving the others for our next visit! So informative and well displayed. I particularly enjoyed the personal stories and accounts of these very brave pilots.

“Amazing number of full scale vintage aircraft”

We couldn't have imagined how interesting Omaka would be. The exhibit displays are very well designed and executed. Each vignette has a lot of information about the aircraft, its history, its use, etc.
