Oh dear, won't be staying here again, and cannot recommend this B&B in Seatoun.
We booked on the basis of it's description and location, should have looked more closely at the reviews. But yerno, I was in a hurry, and accommodation was filling up fast on a busy weekend in Welly which was hosting some big national events.
Unfortunately, our experience appears to have been the same as other recent reviewers. My first impression on arrival, having climbed the steps through the narrow gate to the porch was that it was a little unkempt, with household odds and sods kind of caste aside on the porch. Inside was the same, bit of a cluttered mess, stuffy smell... Ah well, it's somebody's busy home...
It was not a particularly welcome greeting when we arrived, we seemed to be just another "booking", and we carried our luggage up the very narrow stairs to the upper level. We were looking forward to the advertised views of the beach and harbour but unfortunately there was a big tree and power pole bang smack in the view instead. No matter... hopefully other aspects would make up for that.
As other reviewers have mentioned, we were also looking for some area to use as a lounge/sitting/relaxing area, as the room is quite compact. None was offered, and to be honest, I didn't feel comfortable asking, after having to ask where breakfast was to be served (in the family kitchen). When we went to check this out we unfortunately met the 'waspy' wife - as aptly described by another reviewer. No greeting, didn't even look at us, said something in unfriendly tone with her back turned to us, that I couldn't make out. So, we high-tailed it into the city to experience Welly's wonderful hospitality for the rest of the day.
On returning to our accommodation about 10pm there was a strong smell of frying onions in our room which seemed to waft up from the kitchen directly below our room. We shut the toilet window (toilet door could not be shut properly) thinking that was how it was getting in, but the smell persisted through the night and was still strong in the morning. This was MOST unpleasant!
But here's the good - breakfast was plenty and pleasant, cooked by Craig the husband. In conversation with him it becomes apparent that he is the one who wants to do B&B and the wife DOES NOT. So, she is successfully sabotaging it because we will not return and nor can we recommend.
Suggest Craig looks for another business partner...
