Quirky, but we liked it

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Mar 2018
Some reviewers found this B and B unfriendly and expensive. It’s true that the hostess doesn’t have much of a profile to guests, and it’s true that the host isn’t that chatty at first. It’s true that the entrance and stairway is darkly furnished within a less than modern house.

BUT persevere and don’t be put off.

Our room was modern, nicely decorated, very comfortable, great en suite and with a good view over the ocean. Start a friendly engagement with Craig and he turns out to be really nice. He was very helpful with guide books and advice on places to go. He serves a really good fresh breakfast with lots of choices. OK, so there’s very little in the way of communal lounging, but we didn’t want to stay in anyway.

As to its location, yes again it’s out of town - but that’s one of the reasons we chose it. Far better to be in a quiet area fronting a beach, and there are a few nice restaurants nearby in Miramar (don’t miss the Roxy Cinema). You’ll need a car but if you’ve got one it’s not hard to get into Wellington

Probably best to research Beachfront B & B and its location to know for sure what you’re getting, but choose it, engage with it and you’ll have a great stay.

It's hard to believe the rave reviews on this B&B. The hosts were the most unfriendly we've ever come across in many years of travel. Our host met us at the door without a smile and directed us immediately to our room. He said breakfast is at 8:30 but didn't say where. He did not indicate there was anywhere for guests to have as a sitting area, until we asked and then said we could use an uncomfortable cluttered passage (which was also his office) between their living quarters, so we felt like we were intruding as they moved through the room a number of times. His wife never did introduce herself to either of us, and scolded my husband for taking his shoes off. (It was raining torrentially when we arrived, and he thought he was doing the polite thing by taking them off in the house). When we entered the kitchen for breakfast, the host was cooking but failed to acknowledge us at all and only after sitting at the table for 5 minutes, did he finally ask if we wanted breakfast. The room itself was pleasant enough with a large very nice ensuite. Nice views of the bay across the street. However, the rate was the highest we paid for any B&B or hotel room in our month's stay in NZ and not worth it. Far from town, difficult to find, and run by the wrong people.

My husband and I had a great stay at this lovely and charming B&B in Seatoun near Wellington. The B&B has a lot of charm. The house is more than 100 years old and the owners have maintained it really well keeping its original style intact.
Our room had a fantastic view to the sea/the bay into Wellington. All the rooms (3) actually have a sea view. Our room was beautifully decorated. Our breakfast was delicious, Craig is a very good cook.
We can definitely recommend this B&B

When we arrived the greeting was scanty and brisk. Only the man spoke to us; the woman was never introduced and showed no interest in us during our stay except to demand that we keep our shoes on in the house and not leave them by the door.
There was no sitting area for guests except in a crowded and uncomfortable room which served as a passageway.
We had booked the most expensive, ensuite room. The other accommodation had even less privacy.
Breakfast was a rushed affair (the woman, whose name we never heard spoken) did not appear. The man did not speak to us when we arrived in the common breakfast area, at one end of the kitchen, so we introduced ourselves to the other guests and made do with what was on the table. Eventually were offered a fried egg. After many of the other guests had finished eating a half-heated offer of croissant was made, but we were just happy to pay up and get out of the unfriendly atmosphere.
We had good experiences in New Zealand; this was not one.

We stayed overnight at the Beachfront B&B. Our room was nicely outfitted, including coffee and tea facilities in the room. We did share a bath with one other set of guests; I believe some en suite options are available. Our host was warm and friendly, and provided a good breakfast. The beach is literally right across the street. If you have a car, this is a great option while in Wellington.

We had a magical time at this B&B, Jude and Craig are the most thoughtful and lovely hosts one could wish for. The house is absolutely gorgeous and our room just lovely. Everything kept spotless, bathroom seemed to be newly refurbished to a high standard. Craig cooks you breakfast in the morning and Jude seems to bake/make everything herself including the awesome granola that's part of the breakfast. I travelled with my mother and we both agreed this was probably the nicest B&B we've ever stayed in. Views are beautiful and it was so amazing to be able to just walk across the road to the beach. In the end Jude sent us off with freshly baked mince-pies and Craig even drove us to the airport. Could not have asked for better or more personal yet professional service. We recommend this B&B wholeheartedly!
