The trick is that you are given some bait and a line and you catch your own lunch. Good fun but if they're not biting it can be tiresome. When you've finished you just take them to the restaurant and they cook them for you to eat. Don't panic if your catch is small as you can purchase more prawns. Not cheap but very tasty.

Hi there,

Thanks very much for visiting Huka Prawn Park.

We are glad that you enjoyed your day at our park. It can be a little frustrating if you can't catch any prawns, but it makes it all the more exciting when you do manage to catch one. We do also have a number of other activities around the park and a guided tour through the nursery and hatchery so there are always lots of other activities to enjoy.

It's great to hear that you enjoyed your prawn meal, they certainly are delicious.

Great atmosphere for our conference group of 150+ people. Food was really good - not just prawns, but a good selection of food and meats. I believe those with special dietary requirements were well catered for. We caught our own prawns first, then had them cooked up for us - great fun!

$100NZD for a kilo of steamed prawns a bit too expensive. $50 for half and then $25 for 6? Sauces yuk - basic bulk bottled. Good service and beautiful sitting on the terrace over looking the river in the sun.

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting and reviewing our restaurant.

Sorry to hear that you aren't happy with our prices. It does take a lot of research and development and ongoing effort and costs to farm a tropical breed of prawn in a non-tropical environment. We actually do make a lot of our own sauces, perhaps not the ones you tried.

We're glad that you enjoyed our service and great views.

We started the day at the prawn park, which was great fun, but we had to grab lunch so we decided to try out lunch at the Prawn Park Restaurant. We thought it'd be good and were willing to pay a bit more considering the number of people that were there and the looks of the food being served by the waitresses. We were definitely in for a surprise.

Firstly, though the wait was long (approximately 30 minutes at about 1.30pm), I do agree that I willingly waited for a table and don't have anything more to comment on that. When we got to the table, we were served by an inexperienced waitress whom lacked fine dining etiquette as she dropped our glasses and utensils onto the table and dragged chairs back into position (which made rather unpleasant and loud noises), but again I may be rather nit-picky with details. Let's move on.

Secondly, after about 25 mins of waiting (yes I was picky on timing as the prawn park closes at 4.30pm and we were anxious to go back to maximise our prawn fishing time before the park closes), we were served our $50 half kilo prawns, which was not much at all and the weight mainly attributed to the weight of the shells of the prawn (please see picture below). I do agree that the prawns were fresh and tasted great, though $50 is rather steep for the serving.

At this point, we saw fish and chips being served to the table behind us when they arrived about 10 mins after we did, which was fine, but when they told the waitress that this was not what they ordered, I knew it was our order. The waitress disagreed with them and told them that this was what they ordered and asked them (in a rude tone) whether they wanted it or not. This was the same waitress that served us and, at that point, we knew it was our order. The people from that table reluctantly accepted the order and took a bite, after which the waitress realised it was wrong and walked up to them, said sorry and just took the plate of fish and chips away, with them looking at her rather shocked. Same thing happened to our order of prawn soup, and that's when the waitress knew for sure she got their table mixed up with ours.

Note No. 1: At this point, if your order is wrong and they have to remake your order, it's not prioritised over other orders. It goes at the back of the queue and you wait another 25 mins for your order. We got our fish & chips and prawn soup at about 2.55pm, with the waitress standing right next to our table asking if she could take the plate away before I could finish eating the fries on my plate.

Note No. 2: Please check your bill before you pay. I checked my bill and we got the bill for the table behind us, who drank a beer and ordered completely different dishes to us (except the half kilo of prawns). I requested for the receipt for my table, and there was an additional serving of fries (which we didn't order on the bill). I then had to ask to cancel that because we obviously didn't order it, and that left us and the waitress quite frustrated with each other. $93.90 for half kilo of prawns, fish and chips, and prawn soup. 10% service charge extra? What a joke.

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, and will continue sharing my negative experience with others.

Hi there,

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to give us your feedback.

I have passed it on to our Operations Manager and Restaurant Manager and we have had some lengthy discussions about it already.

There certainly sounds like there was some confusion over your order and the waitress you have mentioned has not followed our service policies. We would usually do all we can to rectify any mistakes in an order as quickly as possible not put the order to the back of the queue as you've mentioned. Additionally, there is never any excuse for our staff to be rude to customers.

You have brought up some interesting points for us to work on and clarify with our staff. Again, thank you for your feedback, rest assured we are using it to improve our service.

We made a short stop at Huka Prawn Park. We found a nice place on the terasse. Prawn cocktail, half kilo of prawns and greek salat were very good and fresh. Prices are a little bit high, but okay for fresh food.
