The Lake Taupo Lodge is one of those places that can exist only through the vision and hard work of someone who cares about providing guests with an extraordinary experience from start to finish. Gary, the proprietor of the Lodge is one of those rare people. Gary and his wife have led full, active lives with wide experiences around the world. They have brought that experience to bear in the creation of their amazing Frank Lloyd Wright inspired lodge, warmly and beautifully furnished, with breathtaking views. They have thought of every detail. Those things that most impact your comfort—bedding, privacy, and climate control are top of the line. You are served delightful appetizers with a select NZ wine before dinner, in a room you wish was your own living room. Gary’s staff is friendly, welcoming, and funny. After one day, coming down for breakfast seems like breakfast at home—just so much better! Breakfast, ah, breakfast.......I can still remember the fruit, granola, and pastries—all best in class, and enough to satisfy any active person—but then Chris, Gary’s secret weapon and master chef, presents you with a full (massive) cooked breakfast including your choice of omelette, eggs Benedict or a scramble, each one the very best of its kind. It boggles the mind!
Gary was so very accommodating in every situation. We twice returned to the lodge soaking wet and covered with mud from all day adventures. Gary helped us clean up, and provided towels, drying racks and fans for our soaked gear.
I was reluctant to write this review for purely selfish reasons—I don’t want to promote the lodge too much, since I’d like to return and would hate to see it become so oversubscribed that I can’t get a reservation! Ultimately my selfishness has been overcome by my sense that Gary and his staff deserve the best review. They have earned it. It’s a lovely place with lovely people. I think them for a great experience and hope to return many times.
