We weren't sure what to expect for only $8 but actually it was way more than we thought it would be! Really awesome sights from a well maintained pathway. We wandered for a good couple of hours. But be aware it is very open, no shelter along the path if it rains...as it did for us.
Lovely, reasonably priced gift shop and friendly staff, too.
This lovely walk is great value for money. Only $8 each and an easy hour of entertainment, longer if you like. It’s an easy walk mostly on boardwalks to see close up some craters and ‘steam vents’ everywhere. Lovely little gift shop too with better priced goods than many others.
This place is really special, definitely worth a visit when in Taupo because it is so unique. The craters and fumaroles are really impressive, a good reminder of how dramatic and powerful nature can be. The staff is delightful and the shop has lovely souvenirs, which is also a good way to support the local community and help them preserve the place.
Easy to get to, easy to get around, great spot to enjoy basic thermal activity. Well worth a visit especially if you have a tight schedule.
I recently visited this park and it was a good experience. For an entry fee of $8NZD the trail around the park took about an hour, including the extra lookout loop.
I drove from Taupo town centre to the park on my way to Tuaranga. It is around 5 minutes drive from the highway to the park. The park wasn't busy and plenty of parking spaces were available.
There were a number of information boards along the trail giving details of the volcanic activity and the flora surrounding the pits. These had enough information but not too much.
Seeing the pools, steam and coloured soils was pretty cool. For the entry fee it seemed pretty reasonable. A word of warning: this is not Te Puia in Rotorua. There are no guided tours, kiwi houses, Maori buildings or erupting geysers. As such, it is $8NZD entry rather than $50NZD. If you only have time for one, in my opinion, go to just Te Puia but it will have coach loads of tourists.
Keeping that in mind, Craters of the Moon park is worth a look if you are passing, but not really worth going out of your way for. Overall a good visit.
This is an educational site to visit and you can walk at a leisurely pace to see everything on your own time. I enjoyed taking tons of photos here.
