This is a normal business hotel, with a few quirks.
Pros
The view from our room was excellent, large windows and a sea view in the distance. The room was in fairly good condition. The mattress was comfortable. The shower worked well (liked the control on the entrance of the shower away from the faucet).
The room had a good number of power outlets.
The bar has some good beer on tap, and a few good items on the menu.
The restaurant serves a very nice steak.
They have a self-serve laundry. ($4 a load.)
Cons
There was not a single lamp in the room. Not a desk lamp (had a desk and a table), not a floor lamp, not a bedside lamp (had two bedside tables), not a wall lamp. Only overhead halogen lights, and those we could only turn either all on or all off. Completely impractical to read by.
The bed has a heating pad that you sleep on top of. That was strange to me (apparently not that unusual in NZ), but what was bad was that the heating pad has two plastic boxes where the electricity gets to the pad on each side. That makes sleeping near the edge of the bed very uncomfortable. They are right at elbow level and that means you lose most of a foot of bed width. The maid did remove the pad when we asked her to.
The breakfast buffet was $22, but was very meager for that price.
There are not that many restaurants in the area. This is mainly a commercial area. Many more around the other end of town with museums and more hotels.
