Clearly sufficient for 2 nights !

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Jul 2016
We stayed 2 night at this place. We had a private 3 persons room, space was enough, warm thanks to a small heating. Common parts could have been cleaner in particular the bathrooms but it contains all that you need.

I had a good experience at the hostel. It was not too busy when I was there - I think maybe 10 guests in total. I stayed in the 6 bed dorm. The rooms linens, bathrooms, and kitchen were clean. The beds were mediocore, but I don't necessarily have the highest expectations at hostels. The kitchen has a bunch of pots and pans for you to use. The other guests were friendly and Christina and Chad were both helpful hosts giving some recommendations of different places to see and shop in the North Island.

Like other users stated, you have to pay for WiFi, which I passed on. I had a car, so it was nice to stay at a place that had free on-site parking. If you had to walk, it is an uphill walk from New Plymouth's city center. One of the guests told me it took about 30 minutes to walk to the grocery store. From what I remember, the shower was lukewarm at best. On the plus side it is nice and quiet in this part of town.

This is a perfectly nice place to stay in New Plymouth. I have a car so didn't mind the distance from the centre. I didn't explore the grounds as others did because I actually didn't know there were any grounds beyond the big field and leisure block! But apparently there are some animals around. As I said it's totally fine for a budget place - it hasn't been updated probably since the 80s so the furnishings and bathrooms are very dated, but during my stay everything was very clean (though the room smelled a bit musty).

The sitting room is quite small and it was hot during my stay so I spent a lot of time on the deck which is very nice. The outdoor area is quite large so it would benefit from some more furniture, bean bags etc as that would maybe encourage more people to relax outside. There is a barbecue and a bigger kitchen at the Leisure Lodge; I didn't know if I was supposed to use them since I was staying in the main hostel, but we just used it and it didn't seem to be a problem. Make sure to bring some bug repellent because there are a lot of sand flies around which is to be expected in the summer and near the river, just they will spoil your fun at night if you don't spray yourself.

When the staff were around they were helpful and there is a lot of information about what to do in the area, plus some games and cards.

I didn't spend heaps of time there because I was busy with hiking and surfing, but I wouldn't mind staying there again some time.

First off, there is nothing wrong with this place; the rooms and facilities were tidy and functional, and the kitchen was large and well equipped. If we had taken a tent pitch here, I probably would have considered it good. However, for the price of a double room it was disappointing - you had to trudge outside to get to the ablution block, which would not have been much fun if it was raining and cold - and apparently there was a hole in the roof of the women's shower block. Overall, the layout/feel of the whole place reminded me very much of life in barracks on a military base (complete with an overgrown assault course at the bottom of the garden!) and we struggled to see what exactly inspired the 'Eco' in the title. If you're looking for a tent / dorm then maybe I would consider this place, but for private rooms it is a bit overpriced and I would look elsewhere.

We recently stayed at Egmont for a few nights in a double room. It's quite an uphill trek from the town centre, but once you are there and don't have bags to carry, the walk is fine. The reception is not open during the day (which i don't think is advertised anywhere online). The owners were very friendly and inviting and shared bulk foods/drinks they had made.

The room itself was not the greatest, I felt itchy during our entire stay and discovered on our last night a small cluster of tiny caterpillar type bugs on the ceiling. This is probably down to the hostel being more of an outdoorsy stay. The bathroom facilities could do with a bit of a makeover, but were functional. There is no free wifi, which is also a bit of a downside.

If you are looking for a quiet place to stay with an outdoorsy feel, this is probably a great place. Otherwise, I would pay a little extra and stay more in the city.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Egmont Eco Lodge for 1 night. As backpackers on a budget, this hostel was the cheapest (with a BBH card discount) in comparison to others' down the road, and had a few beds available still considering the long weekend here in New Plymouth. We had not read one review on this place- and I probably wouldn't have stayed if I did. Fortunately, it was an overall great experience for us both.

Aside from being 30 minutes or so from the "city" (and carrying 50lb bags on our backs up steep hills), the hostel was worth the trek (of course you can pay to cabby your way but again, we are cheap). The hostel is located in a very friendly and respectable neighbourhood and we both felt safe and at home here.

Check in was 5pm, which left us waiting for 3 hours exhausted from our travels and wanting a place to snooze. This was not a HUGE deal though, as we made the best of the property and took a stroll deeper into the "grounds". The receptionist Christina, was amazing. She was friendly, had a great sense of humour, and was very approachable. We paid for our room ($23 each for the 7 room dorm) in cash, so had no issues with credit card charging. ***MY ADVICE TO ALL TRAVELLERS REGARDLESS IS PAY WITH CASH*** We learned quickly that paying with credit adds an extra 4% to the total cost in most hostels, and that can add up quickly if using it often! There was a $20 key deposit (which we didn't have to pay as business was slow) just so you're aware too, that is returned to you upon checkout.

Christina took us to the river in the back and educated us on the tame eels and offered suggestions about times and places to feed them if we wanted. We met Peanut, the hostels orange tabby, as well as some chickens, sheep, bunnies, and birds. The only noise you hear around are the trees and birds- simply amazing.

We enjoyed a nice stroll through the property and got to see the BIGGEST wild lillies we'd ever seen (the size of our face!) as well as some old high-ropes courses- kinda cool. I am still wondering if these facilities were once a camp?! There's a couple individual buildings (aside from the main building) that play host to travellers I'd imagine too.

The kitchen was kept clean and tidy, and the food cupboards had cute chalkboards above each cubby to write your name and date of check out. Both the kitchen and "dining" area are very small and hard to navigate around when there are even just 5 of you there.

You can use the computer monitor with Internet for $3 for 30 minutes OR pay $5 for 24 hours of wifi. We opted for the $5 plan and received a card with login information. If you have 2 devices (a phone and a computer for example), the code only works on one at a time. This wasn't a problem for us. In fact, this wifi was the fastest I think I've ever experienced!

We bunked with 4 other gentlemen (6 of us total in the room) and each one of us respected each others privacy and belongings. The room is small, especially with bags and personal items everywhere (we tried to organize as best as we could!) but we weren't all in the room at the same time so again, this wasn't really an issue. We must've all been tired because our lights were out, everyone in bed sleeping, by 10:30pm. In fact, I had the best sleep in New Zealand this far on that night. My mattress was almost TOO soft, I literally had a sink hole in the middle that was hard to even get out of! This wouldn't be a good bed for those with back issues. My boyfriends mattress was more firm though. He could feel a couple springs but still a rested sleep nonetheless.

The showers and toilet facilities were very clean (I think there were 2 communal showers and 2 communal toilets for the entire main building) and never had to "wait" to use them. We didn't use the laundry facilities either, so I can't touch on the price of that (sorry!).

In the evening, we sat on the back porch as the sun went down, enjoying a good read and a cup of tea.

We checked out a couple minutes late (15 minutes or so) with no repercussions. I was also told they offer work for accommodation at this hostel too, should you be interested in that!

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely go back. The price was an added bonus too! I hope this review helps!

Cheers!
