A pleasant meal served in a colonial era dining room. Service was efficient, if occasionally unsmiling. We both had very nice fish main courses, mine a Parmesan-crumbed, pan-fried Tarakihi served on capellini pasta with green veg, and my wife's a crispy-grilled salmon served with new potatoes, fennel and green veg.

Basil Faulty managed this place everything would make sense....

We are a family of 4 who stayed for 2 nights.....couldn't wait to leave.

The walls seem to be made of rice paper, because you can hear the people in the adjacent rooms think.
The beds are old, and unless you like mattresses that sink in the middle and are extremely soft it's almost impossible to sleep.
The furniture is old and uncomfortable.
Door knobs fell off and one door couldn't be closed

The rooms are very small and the furniture does not fit...so u are bumping into things.

We didn't try the restaurant so no comment.

The staff try hard to be helpful and friendly.....I guess that's some compensation.

Oh and if you are not familiar with Rotorua the smell of rotten eggs permeates the air everywhere, but this hotel seemed to be the epicentre of bad smell.

We went to the Princes Gate Hotel restaurant for a good meal in a stylish restaurant.
Pre dinner drinks were taken in the bar and then went for dinner. Dinner was generally fine but had a few issues that prevented me from giving 5 stars:
The soup of the day had to be eaten with a fork as it had the consistency of mashed potatoes rather than soup. The taste however was excellent.
The scallops as starter were brilliant!
Main meals were also tasty and well presented.
The only downside was the dessert:
We ordered Creme Brûlée with fresh strawberries.
What we got was hot Custard with sugar poured on it but not caramelized and the strawberries were replaced with Kiwi and Orange. Comment of the waitress: well, they are obviously out of strawberries...
A rather disappointing finish to an otherwise delicious dinner.

The best part of our stay at the hotel. We really enjoyed the service and delicious food at dinner and a breakfast with both buffet and a la carte options. Biggest plus was the staff who were just superb. Chatty, friendly but not intrusive. A real asset.

Brown cloudy apple juice, overcooked and some things under cooked. Inappropriate waitress who made fun at my husband for not liking mushrooms and was rude to a couple who accidentally came in the wrong door. Eat elsewhere, much nicer and cheaper.
