Very friendly motel

Review of Ascot On Fenton
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Mar 2020
Arrived in Rotorua with nowhere booked. Another motel owner phoned this place for us and we were welcomed in a most friendly way. Our host gave us a great deal and was super lovely. Private spa pool was an added bonus!

This is a decent motel with really friendly managers/owners and great location. Literally a 5 min walk to the mall area and a little bit further to the main street. They let us check in a little bit earlier as we had a little one. The facilities are a little bit tired but you have all the amenities you need. The rooms are clean and the spa was great to chill in during the afternoon. Unfortunately for us, the little one and I did get bitten by fleas (my husband was fine) during the night but when we told the owners in the morning they quickly changed us to a new room and we could see they were stripping the old room to clean it again. Full credit to them for doing that!

Accommodation was perfect for us, 2 families travelling together, we had the 2 bedroom apartment. A little pricy but to be expected at this time of the year. Rooms were a little dated but very clean and equipped with everything we needed. Highlight was the super friendly hosts!

We booked last minute, and boy were we lucky. This place is a real find, and we left the owners as friends. Nothing was too much trouble and the welcome and care was high, even by NZ standards. A real find. Don’t stay anywhere else.

The friendliness of the hosts in no way compensated for the poor accommodation.

Pluses
1. Unlimited free wifi 2. Warm 3. Two TVs but hardly a plus AND now it's all downhill.

Minuses
1. At $149 per night, way overpriced. 2. SHOWER (Day 1) - poor flow; water dwindled and eventually came to a halt. (Day 2) - again poor flow and went cold before the shower was finished: what an annoying way to start your day. The host was informed and seemed surprised but language facility did not enable good one on one communication. (Day 3) - forget it. Incidentally, if you check AnnHeads review of May 2017 you will read of similar problems so nothing much positive has happened in two years. 3. THE BED; talk about "partner disturbance". When either of us moved, it did too; like a trawler in heavy seas. 4. DANGEROUS electrical fitting (bottom one of two in the kitchen.) I turned it off at the wall in order to extricate toast from the toaster and later discovered that it was not off at all so danger of electrocution. The host was informed and she said an electrician would fix it. SO if you are in unit 37, please check it out. 5. FITTINGS - snapped off front window catch (security issue), curtain cord and hairdryer fixtures coming away from the wall. 6. BEDROOM curtain (which concealed the spa) was visibly stained. 7. SPA - too scared to use it. I didn't see how it would fill with enough hot water to use after our experiences with the shower. Still, I don't know much about spas. The neighbours used theirs and for a long time the noise in our unit was deafening as the spa graduallly filled. 8. PARKING - quite tricky diagonal parking and exit the same; you have to get out of your car, slide the gate across , get back in your car drive out, get out of your car, go back etc. etc. 9 COMPENDIUM - no folder of handy information relating to advice, emergency numbers, attractions etc as one sees in most motels.

We needed to stay one more night in Rotorua – we’d paid premium rates for 2 nights in a “classical” hotel which lacked any class, and couldn’t face another night there. So we did a drive up Fenton St and found a real gem. Very friendly and helpful host, very clean throughout the whole unit, quiet, very comfortable bed, pillows and quality linen, good shower, our own private spa pool - real value for money at over $100 less per night than our previous hotel, and with a lot more character. The kitchenette was modern and very well set-up. Two flat-screen TVs – one in the lounge (for watching sitting up) and one in the bedroom (for watching lying from the spa pool). Tip: for the best deal use the motel website to book.
