Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

We were extremely pleased with the entire experience.
1) Booking: Easy. I made the reservation on my mobile device in the morning from a Hotel in Auckland.
2) Transportation: We were picked up at our Hotel in Rotorua at the exact time scheduled by a very pleasant and entertaining driver, Mr. Hare, who made the entire journey very pleasurable and memorable.
3) The entire experience at the Village was very well executed. One of the best cultural experiences of my lifetime. The people make the difference. They sing and dance with so much love and passion; truly amazing.
4) We had requested Vegetarian meals and once again, we were very pleased with the option provided.
5) Our driver, Mr. Hare made the return journey even more memorable and special.

When travelling we love to learn about the culture. From the pick up via our accomodation- culture evening - bus ride home was sensational.
Very informative , beautiful family business, awesome cultural experience, beautiful food and a very funny ride home in the bus.
Very privileged to have this available to tourists. Great that we are fortunate enough to take photos and learn of the Maori heritage.
Thank you for sharing your family with us.

This was really well organised. Everything from the pick up in the bus, transfers and arrangements were superb. Special thanks to the bus driver Davy who was cheerful and hilarious during the journey to and from the village. The food was deliscious and well cooked. But I particularly enjoyed the sharing of Maori culture and the beautiful voices. The women graceful and talented. It was worth every cent (originally thought it was a wee bit expensive) definitely not to be missed. All the Maori people involved seemed to be enjoying themselves and were proud of their culture! And, this pride was wonderful to see and absorb as a tourist from another country. well done!

I have now done all four, however loved my time here so much!

The bus trip out takes a bit of time compared to the others but was well worth the wait.

Had the honour of bring volunteered by our Waka to represent them as their Chief, and this is an honour.

The powhiri (welcome) was awe inspiring. Having Maori warrior challenging with Taiaha in hand certainly had the blood pumping and nerves tingling. Gentlemen, should you get the chance, and want the honour, put your hand up. Sorry ladies, this is unfortunately a role for the men.

We were shown through the village, having the various different parts of the culture shown and explained to us. Unfortunately the weather made this part a bit quicker, but the weather gods were in charge of that.

The performance and display of skill was amazing. We have never been treated to a better display. To be a part of it, again was a privilege that I am glad I got selected to be chosen to represent our waka, our tangata whenua (people).

The meal was awesome, and catered to varying food tastes. Even better is they also cater to food allergies, just let them know you have one.

The return trip on the bus was a laugh. Our driver gave us a memory we will not forget.

Our biggest struggle was in deciding which Maori trip to book. You probably only need one, and in honesty they’re probably all good. My husband picked Tamaki Maori Village, (and the next day we actually realised it was the same one that a friend in England had recommended - coincidence). It was a bit touristy to be fair, but then tourists - like us - flock to Rotorua to do the Maori experience so it’s not to be unexpected when they are handling large volumes of people. And despite all that, my opinion is that Tamaki Maori Village laid on a great evening for us. They made it easy to get us from the centre of town to the village, as well as having a bit of fun on the journey. The opening of the show was super and the best bit for me, so I won’t spoil it by writing it down here. The Haka was good, as was the food. An enjoyable evening.
