Clean and fresh, with the warmth of true manaakitanga

Impressed by the Sudima on this brief trip for a mini retreat. Great service including breakfasts and lunches. The hotel feels clean and fresh and with beautiful whakaairo and tukutuku. We were made welcome and nothing was a problem. Will be back. Ngā mihi nui.

Check in was quick and fuss free but the place has a confusing layout so we had to get back in the car and drive around to the rear to access our room. The room was small but pleasant and clean with beautiful toiletries. Shower ran cold to scorching so needed frequent adjustment and the location of the room to others meant the curtains had to stay closed resulting in lack of natural light but was quiet with ample parking.

Room tip: Ground floor rooms adjacent to the rear car park were handy.

The room itself was fine, new carpets, looked as if it was well maintained but… we had 301, right beside the external walkway from reception to the outside blocks and also right beside the corridor leading to the outside/ reception block. The hotel can’t really help inconsiderate guests who stand around chatting right beside our window- but they could prevent reversing buses beeping early morning and leaving their engines running before they leave in the morning. Some of us want to lie in later than 6.30-7 am on holiday. Also meant we couldn’t have curtains open at all as other guests were right outside the full length windoes. Also the hairdryer had a US socket so couldn’t work it and had to visit reception with dripping wet hair- to be given an adaptor for NZ!! Hotel was full of conference guests and tour bus guests- 10 buses in car park overnight right beside our room disappointing stay

Room tip: Avoid room 301

I had a King Superior room which was lovely - thick carpet, big bed - but I'll know next time to ask for a room with direct sunlight. That's my only quibble from my three-night stay: both the staff and the central location are excellent, and there's plenty of car parking available.

Note that the shower is over the bath so if you're six-foot or taller, you might have to bend down a bit to get under the showerhead. Also, the bath is slippery but you can ask for a non-slip bath mat at reception.

Breakfast was an option of cooked or continental; I had both during my stay and they're both really good.

My primary reason for visiting Rotorua was to go to the Polynesian Spa, which is literally just across the road from the Sudima. And even though the hotel is next to Rotorua's main road, I couldn't hear any traffic from inside my room. I'll definitely stay here again.

Room tip: There's guest-only parking around back (which is patrolled by a security company) plus a large public car park to the side.

It was the worse hotel stay I have ever had! I have travelled a lot both with business and pleasure. The carpet was thread bare in three places. The grab bar in the shower was coming off the wall (so would not have been able to sustain you if you needed it. The room had not been cleaned properly. I have taken photos for a record. I did show these to the manager on my departure, but he wasn't that concerned.

Very poor experience. Specifically booked this hotel because it offered a family room with a separate bedroom to accommodate our family of 4. When we checked in however they put us in a standard room with 2 side by side beds (no separate room). Called the front desk and they moved us into a family room...but the room looked absolutely nothing like the photos online. It was not renovated and looked like it hadn't been touched since the 1980s. The ambiance came with torn window coverings, carpets that were dusty and even used q-tips on the floor. Gross!!! We checked in late so by the time we moved rooms and settled in, it was time to sleep. Unfortunately the heaters weren't working properly so our first night sleep was frigid!! Wifi was also spotty throughout the property. On the plus side, the staff was very nice and helpful. Next time I visit Rotorua I would book the Pullman or Novotel instead.
