For out of towners, this is probably one of the best ways of seeing the town and lakes, and learning some local history. Our guide Grant made the trip amusing for those in the Duck and out - we all had a 'duck quacker' which meant we could quack at people we passed! The 'Duck' itself is an amphibious war vehicle, and has its own interesting history. It is able to drive into the lakes and then becomes a boat - a highlight was motoring into Lake Tikitapu while the Mission Impossible theme song was playing. Grant had a huge array of sound effects and jokes to keep the whole trip entertaining, and knew all the local legends (why is Lake Tikitapu called that? What about the other lake names? Who were Hinemoa and Tutanekai?). He gave keen duck riders the option to have a go at driving, and gave out lollies as prizes for his quizzes.
Even as a kiwi who has been to Rotorua many times, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. I learnt a lot of local lore, and had a blast sharing this special of NZ with my English family. Great for kids, couples... The whole family!More
