A little old but very clean and comfortable

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Apr 2017via mobile
My wife and I stayed for the Easter weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The unit was very clean and well kept and the exterior well presented. It's not modern but it met our needs very well. Sky tv worked and the wifi worked very well not like other places. All in all, not a bad location, close to the city centre and within walking distance to major attractions. Highly recommended.

Very handy location with Pak'nSave across the road and walking distance to town. Owners very helpful and accommodating with our large group, with free pick up service from the bus station. Units were clean and tidy with full size oven plus microwave.

As it says in the name, really close to the town centre, a three minute walk, and a Pak'nSave over the road, so ultra convenient. It has been there for a long time, so not brand new but has stood the test of time pretty well! Friendly reception was taken to new heights in sending on a left-behind jacket and passport, where their speed and efficiency and helpfulness was exceptional.

Room tip: All rooms pretty much the same and the motel is set back from the road so pretty quiet.

This was my 2nd stay here. I wrote a review for another place recently that is usually my go-to for a room with a view. City Close is now going to be my usual go-to for a good value budget-ish central motel.

Can't give it 5 out of 5 though. No aircon (wouldn't expect it in a cheaper place anyway - if there was a fan/blower I didn't see it). And a bit awkwardly the soap dispenser in the shower was as good as empty. Not much I could do at 4:50am in the morning but pump it hard for a few dregs to get by.

Free wi-fi.

Very clean and friendly hotel. Very dated, but in a nostalgic way The Kitchen and the bathroom has a very 1950s feel to them and the kitchen was well supplied with an authentic 1970s range.
The bed and furniture was more current and the atmosphere nice. There were a few minuses. One being that I suspect this place has either livers (People dumped here by WINZ and housing NZ). One unit had two Indian or Negro men who came out and smoked up a storm every hour. Also the units are very small and the air conditioning is limited to a fan. Buy your own milk too, as you get only a small amount in a nostalgic Crown Lynn container. TV is also the most restricted Freeview with only National channels and 1 or 2 basic sky with the Home shopping and Religious Bigotry channels.
A huge plus is the closeness to the city of Napier and its art deco heritage. As quirky and interesting as it is, this place is very tired and sadly needs an update. The area it is in is a bit sleazy too.

Room tip: Choose a room not facing the unit next to the office, parking is a bit hard.
