Quirky Nostalgic Hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Jan 2017
Very clean and friendly hotel. Very dated, but in a nostalgic way The Kitchen and the bathroom has a very 1950s feel to them and the kitchen was well supplied with an authentic 1970s range.
The bed and furniture was more current and the atmosphere nice. There were a few minuses. One being that I suspect this place has either livers (People dumped here by WINZ and housing NZ). One unit had two Indian or Negro men who came out and smoked up a storm every hour. Also the units are very small and the air conditioning is limited to a fan. Buy your own milk too, as you get only a small amount in a nostalgic Crown Lynn container. TV is also the most restricted Freeview with only National channels and 1 or 2 basic sky with the Home shopping and Religious Bigotry channels.
A huge plus is the closeness to the city of Napier and its art deco heritage. As quirky and interesting as it is, this place is very tired and sadly needs an update. The area it is in is a bit sleazy too.
Date of stay: January 2017
Room Tip: Choose a room not facing the unit next to the office, parking is a bit hard.

Spent a night in this motel on a toad trip from Auckland to Wellington. It is not that easy finding dog friendly accommodation in NZ and this was one we found online. The motel is not the most modern one but it is spotless clean, the rooms are quite spacious and the owner very friendly. There is free wifi and a flat screen tv of a decent size. The motel is very close to supermarkets but also just a three minute walk to the esplanade with the beach and restaurants and also very close to the mall and shops. Overall it was a very pleasant stay for a good price!

We stayed for one night at City Close motel and were happy with our stay. We'd give it 3 and half stars if we could.

Good location. Close to shops, beach front and supermarket.

Friendly staff and the unit itself was very clean. Bedding, curtains and carpet have all been recently upgraded and are very nice. Bed was comfy.

Kitchenette and bathrooms are dated but functional and tidy.

We'd stay again if we came back to Napier. Good value for money.

At first I was skeptical of the motels because of the movies, but the couple that manage this motel was very friendly, the room very clean and neat, although the motel it is like a 70's motel is very neat and does not look old nor bad conditions, great stay. I was a bit worried because there are glass doors directly to the parking lot, but New Zealand it is a safe place so nothing happened.
It is near the Aquarium but not so near from the downtown.
But in general good experience if you have to be at the aquarium early, this is definitely a strong choice

The best thing going for this motel is its closeness to the city centre, supermarkets, restaurants and shopping.
Very dated decor. Old fashioned in every way. I was in unit 8 up flight of steep stairs, dangerous for kids or elderly. Milk was provided in open top uncovered jug. Room was very warm, no air conditioning. Cicadas in near trees made hell of a noise all night ( I realise probably not a lot the motel owner can do re this!)
Price relatively high compared to nearby modern motels, with only slightly longer walking distance to attractions.

Well it's not the flashiest accommodation - the fridge is a little loud and it can be stinking hot the staff were friendly and helpful! The room had great kitchen facilities which meant we could cook breakfast rather than dine out, but it was super close so we could walk to local restaurants and bars if we wanted.

Close to supermarkets.
Free Wifi.
Comfy bed.

BEST OF ALL our two Jack Russell's were welcome too..
