We enjoyed the museum. It has a few areas dedicated to regional culture as well as a few rooms dedicated to changing art exhibitions.
when we victors a contemporary art prize exhibition was on and there were some very strange works on display.
I would recommend about an hour to look around. Out the front of the building on the Main Street is a commercial art and craft gallery with exhibition space. That was well worth the visit if you like art and crafts.

This ever changing space is an amazing place for kids and adults alike to explore.
we were intrigued with the" reflections " exhibit and the old favorites in the ANZAC display and the Maori carvings and Waka.
The treasure hunt kept the little ones busy and they all received a certificate at the end.
having the interactive screens , Minecraft , magnifying glasses and scales kept us all interested in what we were seeing. I've heard kids say Museums are boring , But I never find that when we visit here.
Thank you again for a splendid day out

This Museum features some excellent Maori cultural displays, some fascinating exhibitions that change frequently, some permanent exhibitions that give an insight into the Waikato and beyond. Those who live in Hamilton value this important facet of our cultural life, and we recommend the Museum to visitors who seek to understand NZ in many ways.

Its not Te papa but it is an informative museum that has a nice ambiance. Quite small it will only take a family an hour or so to walk round but it has some nice displays that are interesting for both adults and kids

We had some time to kill in Hamilton on a rainy day so called into the museum, it's free entry except for the special exhibits. It was a nice enough museum but nothing special that little kids would be interested in (compared to te papa in Wellington and te manawa in Palmerston North), so this limited our time there. Worth a visit if you are in Hamilton anyway.
