We have been fortunate to have stayed in many places throughout the world and do not often review many places but we felt that the Blackhouse at Gisborne deserves a review due to the stunning accommodation and the superb location at the top of a hill overlooking the valleys from the rear elevation and the breathtaking view out to sea from the front. We found the accommodation so relaxing and spotlessly clean with every conceivable comfort to hand. Nothing was too much trouble for our Hosts Digby and Charm who made us so welcome. The stay at this holiday rental is without doubt the best we have ever stayed in and whilst it appears to be expensive, it is value for money and we will be booking again for next year . Many thanks to Digby and Charm for your hospitality.

A perfect location atop a hill in Okitu, 11 min from central Gisborne. Magnificent views of Wainui beach out the front and of beautiful hilly farmland out the back. House is amazing, something like a hunting lodge meets warehouse. Bifold doors and windows all round mean you can capture a breeze to cool the house down no matter which direction it's blowing from. The house is an absolute delight to just hang out after a surf or swim, but the views at dawn and dusk and of the night sky are exceptional. Quite possibly the best kitchen view to cook from and you are spoilt for choice with picturesque dining spots.
Owners Charm and Digby were the perfect hosts, including providing us with the most amazing locally-caught fresh crayfish. They also gave us advice on all of the best things to see and do in the area.
Stingray feeding at Tatapouri beach (fantastic experience but be very careful of the kingfish - nearly took our daughter's fingers off!)
Surfing with Frank at city beach (waves look dead flat but actually great for beginners)
North end Makarori beach - gentle surf
Rere Falls rockslide & swimming holes - hair-raising but awesome fun
And lots of sun baking, lounging around, reading, cooking or movies in what we think is one of the best beach houses in NZ.
