Visiting family in Auckland and celebrating husband’s birthday over a long weekend I wanted to take him somewhere special and this restaurant had so many positive reviews I thought we should give it a try.
Our table for 2 was hard up against a window with a lovely view of the boat filled harbour, but next to a large and noisy table. Requesting to be moved was not an issue and this was done swiftly and without fuss.
We started with 6 delicious oysters, followed by pan fried scallops with pancetta on a bed of cauliflower purée, and the prawn entree in a rich nduja sauce. We then both had half a crayfish each, one mornay and one with hollandaise sauce on the side. Fantastic, cooked perfectly, fresh and flavoursome. We had confit carrots with labne to accompany the crayfish, again absolutely delicious.
Ok so my view on this restaurant…when I first arrived I had some misgivings, I thought I’d walked into a cruise ship catering to loud baby boomers, being a boomer myself this isn’t a criticism, merely an observation. The tablecloths could have done with a press and they should consider laminating the menus which looked as though they’d been rough handled over time, just fixing these two would immediately elevate the overall experience and be worthy of this business.
Clearly this place has a great loyal following and it deserves it, the food is fantastic, the staff attentive and enthusiastic and the value for money unsurpassed…coupled with an outstanding location this makes it a winner. Just needs a little tidy up but really, I’m saying this more for them than my being picky…we will be back and I totally recommend it!
