Description: The Birdcage was originally known as the Rob Roy Hotel, a wooden building originally built on the site in 1865, making it one of Auckland’s oldest pubs. The current building was constructed on the same site in 1885, when Victoria Park was a busy industrial area that included ship builders, sawmills, a brass and iron foundry and glassworks. The hotel was designed by Edward Mahoney & Sons, who designed many of Aucklands early hotels as well as St Patricks Cathedral. Back in the day patrons could reach the hotel by road or water as it originally sat on the Freemans Bay shoreline. The reclamation of the old bay was completed in 1901, and Victoria Park was created on most of the resulting flat area. The building was famously moved 40 metres in a painstaking process to make way for the Victoria Park tunnel project. The tavern today is beautifully restored to its former glory as a local tavern under the stewardship of publican Phil Houston. The local to the locals since 1885!

Nice place for a mid-week beer.

The bar staff were friendly and helpful, and you can’t really get a beer wrong too here. Sitting outside was great, however was a little noise from the traffic. Apart from that, it was a great place to have a mid-week beer.

We called in here to continue the retirement celebrations of a friend from work.
Four ladies who just wanted a quieter place & some good snacks.
Ticked both boxes. Food was delicious & good size portion for snack. Had the avocado dip, kumara chips & the garlic bread loaf.

Nice place and the bartender kindly gave a sample of a beer my friend wanted to try.

When we ordered two he only filled to the top. We asked him to top the other up and he added literally a drop of beer!.

I pointed this out and he responded "I've already given you a sample"!!!
