“Friday night at the Viaduct”

White and Wong's - Viaduct, Auckland
Ranked #66 of 1,966 Restaurants in Auckland Central
Price range: $25 - $120
Description: White + Wong's 'East meets West' cuisine takes classic street foods from China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand - the noodles, soups, curries and delicious dumplings - and created an eclectic menu to pick and choose from to suit. Flavoursome Massaman and red curry pastes made from scratch. Oysters, and sashimi with freshly ground wasabi root. We're not purists, so if it's tasty, White + Wong's are steaming it, frying it and serving it up fresh and fast. In some dishes you'll find untouched classics like the Bang Bang chicken and BBQ pork buns, while others, whole Peking Ducks, numbing & fragrant prawns and BBQ meats are our take on Chinese street food, tweaked and re-imagined. White + Wong's brings big and fresh Asian flavours to the central viaduct, right on the water.

Wasnt sure where to eat as so many great choices at The Viaduct, but somehow ended up at White and Wongs. No reservation and the place was extremely busy but the maitre de found us a top table almost immediately. And from there on we had fantastic service, fantastic food and really enjoyed ourselves. The place has a good ambience, food delivery was prompt, perhaps too prompt as it is nice to spend a bit of time relaxing when eating out. The staff were most helpful, extremely pleasant and couldn't fault them. I strongly reccomend.

We had booked in for 4.30 pm as we were going to Spark Arena to a show. We arrived at 4.10pm expecting to sit at the bar until 4.30 pm but our table was ready so we were seated straight away. I ordered the Sweetcorn and Chicken soup as an entree and the Chicken Pad Thai as a starter. The waitress advised that as soon as the Pad Thai was ready she would bring it out as I had ordered an entree and a starter. I was almost finished my soup when the pad thai came out - so all good. Both were beautiful. I had the deep fried icecream for desert which was underwhelming. My friend had the creme brulee which was extremely salty almost like someone had picked up the salt container instead of the sugar when making the brulee. Another friend had a pot of tea and was given an unclean cup. She asked for it to be replaced and then felt she had been forgotten about so had to ask again. When a new cup was brought to the table she felt like it was the same unclean cup!

The service was quick. We had three courses in just on an hour.

Despite the issues we enjoyed the evening and food and would definitely go back.

We have been here many times before and this time it seemed the food was not the same. The Bang Bang Chicken is a dish I will not order again, it is cold and the flavors seem too strong and is a muddle of tastes. The beef dumplings were soupy and tasty. The soft shell crab sauce was too strong. The only dish I really liked was the squid. Not enough positives to want to return really which is a shame as our last experience was awesome.

On a very busy Sunday arvo we expected the service to probably be a bit slow.
But no way, great timing for food and drinks. Such an awesome setting and good little menu. We had the sweetnsour crispy squid and bangbang chicken. Both were excellent, and we were pleased with portion sizes (for the city).
