The rooms are very basic but clean and comfortable. This place is all about the location. On Adelaide Terrace it is right in the middle of the city and two blocks from the Swan river. The amenities are good. If you are looking for a place in Perth with a good location on a budget than this could be the perfect place for you.

The only downside is that they only have one room with private bathroom. All the other rooms have a single bed and shared bathroom. Men and women are in separate blocks. So if you are with someone you need two rooms and have to go visiting, which is cossie. Kind of takes me back to living on campus at University.

The single rooms do seem a little expensive for what they are but you are in the middle of the city, so comparatively it's probably ok. I only stayed in a single room so can not comment on the dorm rooms.

Security is good. Access card is required to get onto the premises. And there are night watch staff rostered on.

I called Townsend Lodge home for 3 months. For a young traveler working short term in Australia, this place was perfect. Is there air conditioning? No. Is the kitchen high tech and homey? No. Are the bathrooms top notch? Of course not. But the people are great. Staying there for so long, I met so many wonderful people--those that worked there, as well as other travelers. There was always people to go to the beach with or out to the bars with. I didn't need 5 star quality, but I did need a community of people while I lived abroad--and Townsend provided just that.

I was at the Townsend Lodge for over a month. I stayed there because the accommodation was arranged by my volunteer organization, Travellers Worldwide. I paid them and they used the money for this hostel.

First, the good news. The hostel was in a great location close to the Central Business District. Second, the people in the reception area are nice..especially Yuri.

However, the rooms are small and gritty and needed to be cleaned. I was there a month and there is no cleaning service except for what you do yourself. There are mosquitoes in the hallways, bathrooms and the showers. It is not a healthy to be around these insects that carry diseases. I just had to kill them whenever I saw them.

Finally, there is no air conditioning. So, when it is 99 degrees in your room, it was 88 degrees in my little brick room. So, I used the fan that they gave and put ice packs in front of the fans to get some relief from the heat. I was there November of 2016. Everyone said that it was going to get much hotter and more uncomfortable in the months to come. Find somewhere else to stay.

Room tip: Choose a room in the front. It is noisy but the air has a chance to get into the windows.

Hi Sharon,
Townsend Lodge is now under new management and we are addressing these problems within the lodge. We have employed a new cleaner and I can say the lodge is now sparkling. I apologise for your concerns but please let me assure you they are being addressed.

I enjoyed staying at Townsend Lodge, there were a mixture of ages and the staff were very friendly. It was convenient for catching the Red Cat to the city bus port, which runs every 8 mins. The cleaning of the kitchen and dining area during the week left much to be desired, at the W/E a guy who lived there used to give it a thorough clean. The kitchen does need some new cooking pans as a lot are well worn and some even rusty!!
I did have to keep asking for the hand wash to be replenished in the female toilets.
Which ever bedroom in the female section you stayed in it picked up the noise from traffic all night. Beds were very comfortable and the linen and room clean.
Despite not having air con, and the Wifi being intermittent I will definitely stay there again when I am next in Perth, as it is good value for money.

Since 2011 I have come back to Townsend Lodge time and again.
The mix of backpackers and long stay guests is great. The management is very capable. The lovely housekeeper Mrs. M. is missed!!! So cleanliness is not quite as it used to be (bring your own tea towel and sponge, your own cup and cutlery if possible).
The location could not be better and I hope that some necessary renovations will be carried out.
