Fantastic wilderness experience. Excellent seafood and snorkelling. Keiran Wardle, who manages the tourism on the national park with with the Parks Department, was extremely helpful and organised. Some things which would improve the experience further would be a more reasonable charge for the vehicle barge and some very basic signage on tracks. In terms of the future of the experience it would be very sensible if significant restrictions were placed on visitors ability to take home fish from the island and immediate surrounds (e.g. a limit of 5kg of fillets or one whole fish). This will help ensure the spectacular fishing experience remains for future generations rather than ending up frozen in Engels and a world class experience being lost.

Thanks Credill for taking the time to comment on your Dirk Hartog Island camping experience. Discounts of up to 50% off for return 4WD transfers have now been introduced and are available for review on the Dirk Hartog Island web site.
We are also working with DPaW to have some new signage on the tracks. $21 million dollars has been set aside for National Park campsite improvements for WA during the last budget and I see that an application has gone into the Shire of Shark Bay for the construction of signage on DHI. The fishing restrictions is a great idea! Will follow this up with Fisheries WA and other regular campers. It would certainly protect this world class experience for future generations. Regards Kieran

I visited Dirk Hartog with my husband and two friends, in 2x4WDs for 8 nights. It was my first time and my husband's seventh (he has mostly been with his mates on a fishing trip). I don't have enough room to describe the amazing experience but if you like fishing, camping, nature, and water, this is the place for an unbelievable experience. Dirk Hartog Island is in a world heritage area. You can expect to see turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, eagles, lots of other birds, stingrays, and heaps of other fish. To get to the Island you need to arrange for a barge to take your 4WD over and book a camping spot, as only 8x4WDs are allowed on the Island at one time. You need to take you sense of humour with you as things don't always turn out how you planned - the weather for example! If you are not up to camping, Tory and Keiran will look after you at the Eco resort. It is best to refer to the web site for more details. An amazing experience!
