just around the corner from the South Yarra train station. Each floor has shared bathrooms but they are individual bathrooms with nice showers. Hotel was a historical hotel that was very well kept with plenty of restaurants around

Rooms and bathrooms are all kept in good, clean conditions. Reception staff were all friendly and happy to help.
Located 100m from the train station (2 stops from the city) surrounded by cafes, restaurants, small shops - very convenient location!

Only downside is that with a room facing the street, the noise coming from outside may disturb some people. At night, there is minimal traffic so it’s not so bad.

We’d be happy to come back and stay again.

Oh, and breakfast is reasonable. Toast, jams, cereal, tea, fruit. Backpacker style of breakfast (just the basics), but bring your own yogurt and peanut butter and you’re all good.

We were checked in by a very rude man who I could tell was going out of his way to be rude. On booking.com it states there is air-con, so to find a little fan in our room when it's been 42 that day was somewhat a disappointment! We were given a room next door to the bathroom which was very noisy, as there is wooden flooring throughout the hotel. Very old decor and the rooms are basic. To be honest for the money, you can't expect much, then again I've stayed in worse but at least been able to sleep with air-con! We both had a cold shower before bed hoping that would help us sleep but no, not a wink all night. 4am - another cold shower, still no sleep. At around 5:30am I went down to reception hoping the rude man had finished his shift. He had, and been replaced by an equally rude man... I explained the situation and that we thought the rooms had air-con. I was told none of the rooms have, only the breakfast room. We were supposed to stay another 3 nights after this but decided we 100% couldn't, seeing as the temp in Melbourne was staying around 40 degrees. He advised that I come and speak to his manager when she came in at 7am, which I did. To our surprise, she listened to our problem and without argument, refunded our money and made sure we weren't charged for the following 3 nights.
For that we are very grateful, although I still have nothing good to say about the hotel itself. Needless to say we didn't have breakfast and were out of there early doors!

This hotel do not have air condition (AC) and terribly weak wifi signal. Sometime they even do not provide hot water when taking shower.
The only good thing is they provide breakfast and milk anytime. If you have limited budget then you may consider it.

Room Tip: Budget choice

Positive: shared bathroom facilities were quite clean

Negative: Incredibly loud street noise from the room. People, trams, traffic - you'll hear it all. Felt like there was no wall insulation. Made for a dreadful sleep. When we asked reception if there was a chance we could move rooms that night (or even the next night), we were told they were fully booked. Totally reasonable response as rooms definitely book up, but the staff were not friendly at all and had a sour attitude. No smiling faces here.

One staff member even suggested that because they had 'upgraded' our room from a double to a triple (we never asked and didn't need the extra bed), that we were lucky and getting a good deal. Clearly, we were upgraded because they were fully booked on the double rooms. We would have gladly swapped our triple for a double, if it was quieter! Terrible reasoning, and what cheek from the staff. They couldn't even suggest where we could find and buy earplugs.

We left unimpressed and rushing to get out of there.

Room Tip: Away from windows at all costs
