The beach at Cooks Beach is unremarkable in itself. It's sandy and forms a horseshoe around the Bay however it lacks shelter and any other features. We stayed in the settlement for a couple of nights and had a walk along Marine Parade which overlooks the beach however it just looked a bit neglected. This is probably due to the number of superb beaches in the area including nearby Lonely Bay, Hahei, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach.

It is of historic interest from the point of view that Captain Cook landed here in 1769 and observed the transit of Mercury, where the planet crossed the Sun, giving rise to the present day name of Mercury Bay and Cooks Beach. The sighting was apparently from near the estuary at the eastern end of the beach.

The settlement is a sleepy place although if you wander beyond the houses across from Marine Parade you come across a small shopping strip on Captain Cook Road which has a pub (The Vessel), a restaurant (Go Vino), a chippy (The Frying Scotsman) and a general store which has everyday groceries and a good wine selection if you are looking for something to eat and drink.

A huge beautiful sandy beach - hardly anyone there. Like a previous visitor we were there on a Monday - everything was closed, we couldn't find anywhere to eat or have a drink.

Without knowing we were here as well 18 years ago. We enjoyed it at that time. But now, on a monday afternoon ... not really. Everything was closed (we didn't know) and the beach was empty. It was a waste of time so we walked all the way back to the ferry again. Too bad and disappointing.

The beach looked nice but the township looked tired and was quite small. I didn't see anything interesting enough to entice me to stop
