BEAUTIFUL RESORT!!

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 22 Jul 2024
The resort was beautiful and the rooms were nice. The restaurant staff the individuals working the bars they were all great and very friendly and they made this Resort stay enjoyable. My friend and I usually do not stay in all inclusive because we spend a lot of time in the city and just out exploring but this vacation was all about relaxation, so this was our first all-inclusive and I was a little disappointed.

However there were many cons.

1) Wi-Fi- it was an additional cost. For those with thier own data plans, the resorts "blocks" your usage depending on your "resort". My phone Wi-Fi always worked in the main lobby and in the areas of their higher end property.

2). The Food- shrimp scampi is not made with tomato sauce. Our first night's dinner was supposed to be Mediterranean and there was only one Mediterranean item on the menu, instead I had Thai shrimp. I would say that three maybe four of their 12 restaurants were consistent in their food. Dinner reservations was almost impossible to get even though we were told to book them two days in advance they were always sold out or full even when the restaurant did not look full because they wanted to push you towards their mediocre Buffet.

3) Service- so I don't expect my room to be cleaned every day in those instances I will put the please do not clean sign on the door but when you do clean my room I expect you to refill everything so if you take my face towel replace the face towel if I drink out of a cup please give me a new cup. So usually when I travel, I do not leave a tip until the end of my trip, and that tip is truly based on the service that I received. So my traveling buddy in her room left a daily tip for when she wanted her room clean one day she left a tip... the tip was taken, but the room was not cleaned. Guest services does not assist you and travel back to the airport instead they send you outside to talk to the Bell hop so they can help coordinate picking up your bags and getting to the airport. Even though if we had stayed in one of the higher end hotels at a minimum they offer shuttles that you can pay for to get to the airport.

4) All-inclusive- there are no snacks provided to you in your room or even at the pool. There were a lot of pool bars but no food and I understand that you wanted to keep the Critter population down so they did not allow you to eat at the pools even though they allowed you to drink to the point where people were obnoxious. So there was one little rest convenient restaurant that had sandwiches or ice cream or cookies but that was a walk so it wasn't anything convenient about that. So they were severely lacking in this area is it related to quick items.

And if you went to the gift shop to buy a bag of chips which you shouldn't have had to do because this is all inclusive restaurant a package of Lay's potato chips was $17 that is absolutely unacceptable.

New experience--we vacationed during a hurricane! El Cid staff was on it. They provided daily updates and secured the property to avoid as much damage as possible. A few things could have been handled differently, but overall we were very pleased with their disaster plan.

Shout-outs to a few that made our stay extra special: Alma and Luis were superstars! Daniel and Carlos in the Mediterranean restaurant were attentive and so very accommodating. So happy to see Daniel back in the Italian restaurant--great surprise! Calmo and Pedro are always welcoming in the French restaurant. Rudolfo and Abmael make breakfast and lunch enjoyable. Lastly, Noe, Adrian and Francisco are the best bartenders you could ask for!

I had an Excellent stay at Marina El Cid! Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. I stayed there 3 nights in July 2024 and do not have a single complaint. The hotel is in great condition, my room was very spacious, AC and fan were working perfectly fine the whole time. The hotel is clean and taken care of, the food is awesome with many options! Getting dinner reservations isn’t easy but I was able to book one after checking in and the next morning I booked one more as there was a cancellation. So double check the morning after even if they are fully booked! I really liked breakfast at the Trattoria, lunch at Haciena Arrecife and dinner at the French restaurant. The other places are good too.

The pool area is vibrant and fun but I mostly hung out on the beach. There are these rock barriers they installed, perhaps to keep the waves from coming in given there are families with kids. But the water is warm and the beach is quiet with plenty of available lounge chairs and umbrellas! The staff cleans the beach regularly from the seaweed as well.

My absolutely favorite part of this hotel is the nightly entertainment. I LOVED the Broadway show (the lead singers performing Phantom of the Opera made me cry from joy). The dancers are awesome! Really enjoyed the Urban show (the acrobatic tricks they did were amazing). The live band in the evening at Abnia bar was super good, they made everyone very happy. And best of all was the Disco with Hugo as the DJ. Absolutely wonderful guy who earlier in the day helped me with directions. I danced like crazy the whole two hours, he played songs that I and other people requested, and finished the night with payaso del rodeo (which I was able to learn quickly!). Special shout out to Hugo, the boss ;)

Overall, I had an amazing experience at Marina El Cid. I didn’t do any of the spa services or tours etc but everything that I described above was perfect.

Room tip: Bring some mosquito repellant, it’s mosquito city over there but not the hotel’s fault whatsoever. Get a map of the hotel!

Booked spa packages for two couples. Were told one price and paid when booking. Then when the second couple was in the middle of the spa treatment they were told they “charge the wrong price “ and the spa cost double what we were told. We would not have booked at the price we ended up paying.

Overall great resort from a "let's party" standpoint, with the French restaurant (Ile de France) being outstanding, but here is why we will never go back. With 7 specialty restaurants, there are no a la carte breakfast options, and only one a la carte lunch option (Aakat), and "grazing with the herd" is not our thing. We were expecting to experience a French, Italian, Mediterranean, etc., breakfast/lunch, when it was all just the same buffet at each location. Plus getting dinner reservations is incredibly difficult, mainly because the restaurants are closed half the time, and when you get there, half the tables are empty. When I asked why I was told, "to provide a better level of service". How is that better, when I can't dine at the restaurant of my choice, because it's either closed or you're telling me there's no availability, when there clearly are tables available? Next is such an easily corrected problem by putting weatherstripping around the room doors, which would eliminate that mold and mildew smell, eliminate mosquitoes, allow your towels and swimwear to dry, as well as save a ton of electricity. We had to ask for a dehumidifier, which was a large brand-new unit that’s probably rated for 2000+sf, yet in combination with the AC couldn’t get our 400sf room any lower than 62% humidity. The entertainment was great, and I would say the best of any resort we’ve stayed at to date, but why have it outdoors where we’re being eaten alive by mosquitoes, when you have a Convention Center right next door? I can see the fire show having to be outdoors, but all the other sing-dance numbers could have easily been inside, because people were leaving mid-show due to the mosquitos. Then back to weatherstripping, one night the resort sprayed for mosquitoes, and when our AC came on it sucked all that poison into our room. We thought something had started burning and called maintenance, only to find out they had just sprayed for mosquitoes. I don’t know about you, but I love inhaling poisonous gases while on vacation.

This property is both a hotel and a Time Share.
If you are checking in as a Hotel guest, from the moment you arrive, they try to “upsell” you to a better room.In our case,to a room with an ocean view.We initially declined but they kept lowering the Cost,so we eventually made a deal.Next they turn you over to a person that tries very hard to get you to sign up for a “Time Share” pitch. This high pressure tactic was both too long and annoying.Be prepared for this and know that unless you are forceful they do not relent.
Unfortunately,we had an A/C issue in our room and though we complained repeatedly,it was not fixed for over half our stay.In addition, the Elevator in our building was constantly Not working. These 2 issues made our stay less than satisfactory and so annoying that I could never recommend this facility.
Here are the pluses and minuses aside from the inability to respond to our complaints.
Pluses:
-The gardens and vegetation were excellent and quite impressive.
-There are multiple swimming pools and the grounds are extensive so it is easy to find the atmosphere you want.
-The staff and employees are very friendly and nice, especially the waiters and cooking staff.
-There are a number of choices for food options and the amount of good available is quite overwhelming.
-You always feel like you can eat or drink as much as you want without feeling like you are being pressured Not to consume too much.

Minuses:
-The beach is Not what we hoped for or were expecting.Since the location is next to a Marina, there are wave breaks so you get no waves or ocean noise and that was Very disappointing for us.
-The rooms at the the Marina El CID,were Not as nice as the lobby. Not awful, but just not as luxurious as the lobby.
-The food, though very plentiful,at the Buffets was not that great, just average.Tip-look for the made to order stations at the various buffets, because that was the best of the food.Example…Omelette station.
-Make reservations for the many restaurants as soon as you arrive because the spaces fill up very quickly. We could Not get in the first night because spaces were not available. The best restaurant in our opinion was the Italian. The seafood and Hibachi were just average. The others we could not get into.

-

Room tip: See initial comments. -Reserve restaurants early or you will never get in. -Look for made to order stations in the various buffets.
