A solid 4 Star Not a 5 Star w/ 5 Star Pricing

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Feb 2024
My sister and I just returned from our stay for 10 nights in a Oceanfront Paradise Swim Up Studio at Margaritaville Beach Resort by Karisma, Riviera Maya, Adults Only. I have given the review a 3 rating due to the fact that most travel sites has this listed as a 5 star resort rating and this is not near any of the other 5 star resorts I have visited in the Riviera Maya (i.e. TRS (both), Haven, Valentin Imperial, Excellence, Xcaret Arte, Iberostar Grand Paraíso & Paradisus La Perla) just to name a few. Don’t get me wrong this is a lovely & clean resort, the room was very nice (with the exception of the FREEZING Swimout pool) and all the staff were very welcoming, however given the various annoyances listed below that have been experience at every other 5 star Riviera Maya Resort, this should be rated as a 4 star and priced accordingly as well.

Annoyances (Again considering a 5 star Rating & Current Pricing)
None of the pools are heated & are FREEZING!!!!
No resort & room overview by assigned resort ambassador, nor any followup/check in after resort check-in
No slippers or flip flops to use in the tiled rooms or swimout patio especially when wet & slippery
Very limited Room Service Menu
Lunch restaurants continuously running out of food options (some option weren’t available for 7 plus days)
Limited restaurant options, especially for dinner
When the resort with the rooms that are currently open was fully occupied, there weren’t enough servers whether at the pool, pool bars or restaurants. On 2 evenings it took us over 2 ½ hrs to obtain our complete order and finish our dinner
No bags or baskets available in Joe’s Merchant when selecting room provisions
Need to carry room provisions from Joe’s Merchant back to own room
Pretty much only 1 evening entertainment option (band & Dj in the LandShark bar/restaurant)

I would like to call out employees that were always pleasant and made you feel special when encountered: Mari P. our assigned house keeper & Angel at the Salted Rim bar.

Would we return to Margaritaville Beach Resort by Karisma, Riviera Maya, Adults Only in the future, No unless the pools become heated and the pricing reflect more of a solid 4 star resort.
Date of stay: February 2024
Room Tip: Don't waste the money on a Swimout as the pools are freezing & basically unbearable to swim in.

We choose this hotel based on its Trip Adviser review on Quality of Food and Standard of Hotel and we weren't disappointed.
The food is of a consistently high standard in both the buffet restaurant and the specialty restaurants.
The hotel rooms are amongst the best we have ever stayed in and are kept very clean.
The majority of the main hotel rooms overlook the pool areas where during the day the pool entertainment is very loud and by night the evening entertainment too loud. This was spoiling our enjoyment of the holiday so we got in touch with the holiday company who arranged with the hotel to have us moved to a quieter room which resulted in a wonderful upgrade to an ocean view suite! There are other quieter rooms which don't have pool or sea views but they don't get any direct sunshine.
The hotel also lists that there are water sports available at no extra charge (with the exception of scuba diving). There are in fact no water sports at this hotel.
We enjoyed the beach which is not directly in front of the hotel building but a short walk. The shore line is rocky which means a short walk to enter the water.
Special mention to some memorable staff who really brought a smile to our faces every day.
Joel and Ramon in the The Boathouse, Annabelis in the bar, the ladies in Joe The Merchants who were all was so friendly and welcoming. Last mention to Miguel at the Tennis/Pickelball courts, book at lesson with him and you won't regret it. We learnt Pickelball and are now hooked.

Loving our trip here so far! Great vibe that is relaxed in a Buffet kind of way. We went to Secrets Moche last January and the vibe here is so much more relaxed with people just having fun and not trying to impress anyone. Super clean and great service so far. Weather could be better but it's way warmer than back in Wisconsin so all is well!

"This resort was extremely disappointing. I have previously enjoyed my stays at some Margaritaville hotels in the United States, so I had high expectations for this all-inclusive resort. However, my experience was quite the opposite. The most significant issue was the apparent understaffing in every department, except perhaps for the bellboys. The restaurants were subpar, with long wait times, and it was extremely challenging, if not impossible, to secure a reservation at a specialty restaurant. The bartenders at the bars and the poolside servers were clearly overwhelmed. It seemed that the resort prioritized catering to corporate groups or outings. Given the numerous options in the Cancun area, this would unquestionably be my last choice for a future visit."

Room tip: Do not go here with all the other choices

We loved that this resort was brand new and not crowded. It’s small and easy to get around.

There are three dinner options with a fourth that will be complete soon. We felt like there were enough options on the menu that we didn’t mind there not being more restaurants. The food was better than what we’ve had in the past and it’s more Americanized. For lunch, they only have a special day or two where you can get food by the pool. However, the outside bar/restaurant that you can order from is right there close and so is Landshark. Landshark has indoor and outdoor seating (overlooking the water) and the other is all outdoor in the middle. Everything is SUPER close.
Dinner usually took about two hours at the Steakhouse and the Italian restaurant, which was longer than we were used to, but again, good food and great people working these restaurants. Armondo in the Steakhouse, as well as all of the workers were especially attentive and great to get to know.

Landshark had live music every night at 9. Good beer (also good food) on tap that they brew right there. The bands were top notch. One day a week they have a live band at the pool during the day as well. They have a foam party on Friday.

The entertainment staff was SO FUN and made a great team!! A huge shoutout to Kevoy, Metzli, Ozzy, Samantha & Brenda. They do an amazing job of entertaining, mingling with guests, and truly building relationships with those who wish to get to know them.
There are games and activities everyday at the pool around 2. Volleyball a couple times a day, and ‘aerobics’, which was not the traditional water aerobics, once a day. Depending on who was leading, it was a dance party and entertaining for those who just wanted to watch and not participate.

The staff in general was the best we’ve ever encountered! Bernardo & Didier in Landshark, as well as all the other guys that worked there, were super attentive and worked so hard to make sure everyone was having a good time. Their service was top notch, as was Patricia’s poolside. There honestly wasn’t a bad staff person there and I regret that I don’t have names of more of them. Great people!

There’s only a few feet of beach right now and it’s not the best beach walking area either, although we still went often. It’s not the typical area that you get in Cancun where you can walk a wide beach for miles. The beautiful pools and amazing people made up for it.

Everyone was super helpful if there was anything we needed at the front desk. Diego was great when he checked us in and continued to keep in touch with our family throughout the week.

The people and high quality of food and drinks make this resort. Book it and enjoy!

Pros:
The entertainment staff was everything. They made this vacation so much fun. Give them a raise. Our island ambassador Dafne was so accommodating and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. Give her a raise too. The foam party was so much fun. It should probably be done twice a week for those who aren’t staying on a Saturday. The waitress by the pool bringing us drinks works so hard and did a great job. Give her a raise. The drinks were great too. The shows and scheduled activities made it so much fun. The rooms and the property are just beautiful. We enjoyed most of our meals.
We will definitely be back!

Cons:
No beach, big downer but luckily we are more pool people. The $120 charge to use sister property down the block for its beach. It should be free.
The salads weren’t great. Try chopping the lettuce and adding cucumber, tomato, black olives and balsamic dressing.
Add chicken tacos to the menu at the snack bar in the center. The other tacos available were really great. We had them every day for lunch because they were so good. There should be food service by the pool not just drinks, The taco boat in the pool should be free or maybe just a $20 charge for convenience, because it’s all inclusive food.
As you see most of the cons are just opinion and insignificant. Please see them as constructive criticism to make this resort even better. We will definitely be back.
