A Sad Reflection

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Aug 2024
The weather was awful during our 10 day family (6 adults) stay. That is no ones fault. However, the hotel was dated and had suffered a lack of maintenance over many years which meant that it could not deal with the weather. Roof tops need work, as do wind breaks. Often seats inside were damp and smelt bad due to rain getting in.
The staff - with the exception of the front desk team - were all very good and are an asset to the hotel. Breakfast team, Ernesto and the bar teams were all delightful.
Arriving after a near 24 hour journey, not being welcomed or being given a towel or drink was poor. Check-in took an hour and a half due to the 6 people in our party being assigned rooms incorrectly (all the right names, just in the wrong rooms). The Front of desk manager and his team were somewhere between rude and/or inept. They did not improve. Anyway, we eventually checked in.
Food choice was limited - several restaurants, but generally the choice was two.
Driving into Cancun in a taxi is about $50 each way...........and twice, I personally saw the concierge taking a commission from the driver.....
Drinks are not all top shelf
Food is OK
Place needs investment
TUI rep was simply not very good, to the point that she begrudgingly apologised for her lack of communication when it was needed. Don't use TUI - they love AI tools to answer your questions and it just demonstrates a lack of customer care.
The chap that organised some trips for us located in the lobby was also very good.
Sad part to the whole story is that when we booked, we did not realise we had been there many years before (maybe 20 years), when it was the Azul. I can say that it was a far better place then!

We could not have been happier with our stay at Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera. From the moment we arrived to returning to the airport we were royally looked after.
The whole resort was spotless with the staff working to maintain it despite Hurricane Beryl that had blown through the week before we arrived.
Special mention to Jesus our designated hotel ambassador who was always on hand to assist with booking us restaurant tables for each evening along with informing us of all guest activities available each day.
The quality of the food was outstanding and varied enough to allow us to try new dishes everyday. The highlight being our numerous lunch time visits to Rita's Taco House where our plates never seem to be empty and our drinks were always full!
The lunch staff at Rita's were also on duty for breakfast at the Beach House so over the 10 days we enjoyed having a lot of fun with them.
The evening entertainment was varied with our favourites being the Caribbean / Reggae night and the Mexican night. The latter certainly had it's fair share of Tequila flowing.
It was a wonderful holiday creating many family memories. Thank you!

This was our first visit to Margaritaville and we traveled with a group of 12 to celebrate high school graduation, overall we had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the property and staff.

We are Exotic members, the arrival and check-in process was a bit confusing, as there were mix ups with the type of rooms requested and the number of people in each room however, our butler, Carlos worked with the management staff to sort out the rooms very quickly and we loved our rooms.

As Exotic members, we booked swim-up rooms and the rooms were large, clean and beautifully decorated, the beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed the swim up benefit.

Our butler, Carlos was amazing! He was very attentive, quick to respond and helped us get reservations for our large party of 12 each night. We communicated through the whats up app, and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable and pleasant.

We LOVED every restaurant on the property, Rita taco place was one of our favorites with the variety of food, ocean beach views and excellent staff.
Frank & Lola's was our most favorite , the customer service was fantastic the food was 5-Star rating and so delicious.
Carlos was our mix-ologist and he made the most beautiful and tasty drinks I've ever had.
Big applause and kudo's to Xenia, she was the manager of the restaurants and she went above and beyond with customer service. She was friendly, helpful and arranged special desserts to help celebrate the graduates and a birthday person during our trip.

Entertainment was good at the property, mostly musicians

We visited the SPA for massages and water therapy, I've been to Mexico many of times over the years and my spa experience at Margaritaville was by-far the best experience. The water therapy session and massage was worth every penny and so enjoyable!

The only area of improvement for this property is the gym , the gym was very small with only 2 treadmills , one elliptical and limited weight options. It was okay and worked for us but felt crowded when the gym had 5-6 people in there at one time.

Overall, I rate this property a 5-star experience, the customer service by the staff was amazing !! We will return again in the future.

This is our second visit to Margaritaville Riviera Cancun. We were here as a family of 5 celebrating our daughter's 16th birthday. Overall, it was a great trip due to our amazing butler (Carlos) and the other amazing staff. I will start with the cons of the resort and end this review on a positive note with the pros of the resort. Even though this review is long, I want to provide an honest and thorough perspective due to the fact that I have been a member since 2017 and have been to 9 different Prestige/Exotic resorts, some multiple times.
• First, I am writing as an Exotic Member. This is now different then being a Prestige member (which is what this resort will try to sell you). The two memberships used to be combined and there were good benefits, but since the separation between Exotic and Prestige, it has been a downhill spiral for members. In a nutshell, the experience has been regretful and confusing. We lost some of our privileges that we paid for when we signed up as a result of this split. For example, we were told we were not invited to the member's dinner but then they later called us and knocked on our door inviting us to the dinner.
• Cons:
1) When we first arrived the welcome was lukewarm. They typically welcome you
with a drink and popsicles for the kids. Nothing this time.
2) The resort did not seem as clean as in the past. For days, the lounge chairs by the pool near Rita's taco house had bird poop all over them. I waited to see if they would get cleaned but finally pointed them out to a worker after they had not been cleaned for a few days. It was only then came around to scrub the chairs. The same pool near Rita's had debris floating on top which was also not cleaned out. Towels were not always available at this pool either.
3) Work out room - very small (two treadmills, one bike, a few weights). The biggest issue here is they would not allow my 16 year old to work out even though she would accompanied by her mother or father. Made no sense to me since this is a family facility. Moreover, our daughter is an athlete and works out multiple times back home in our local gym. After I said something to our butler, he helped to facilitate a waiver that we signed which allowed our daughter to accompany us.
4) One of the spa employees - Dominique - was not as friendly. Not sure what was going on with her, but she should get feedback about trying to be more pleasant since she is the first person guests see when they are going to a spa to relax. It should not be stressful to have to interact with an employee who appears to be in a bad mood. Her tone and demeanor were not inviting.

• Pros:
1) First and foremost, our incredible butler, Carlos!! He was gentle, kind and went the extra mile to help make our experience better - from making arrangements for the sparkling wine to be sent to our room (even though it was supposed to already be there waiting upon our arrival as it is stated in our membership), to figuring out a way so our daughter could work out in the gym after initially being denied, to getting our son's ball that was stuck on the balcony of one of the other guest's room, and especially awesome was going above and beyond to decorate and make arrangements for our daughter's 16th birthday. Carlos was quick to respond when we needed something and did everything in his power to facilitate a wonderful vacation for our family. We also want to thank Alberto who also filled in as our butler when Carlos had a day off. Alberto was attentive and helpful. He also helped to make
2) Luzma - did a fantastic job cleaning our room on a daily basis and made sure we were replenished with towels and toiletries.
3) Bed and pillows were very comfortable!
4) The shower was amazing - good water pressure and plenty of hot water.
5) Carlos our server at Frank and Lola's was one of the best servers we've ever had. He remembered everything that we ordered and how we wanted it, his timing was perfect, and he was engaging. He is a good model of what hospitality should be like everywhere.
6) Our friends, Emilio, Aurelio, Antonio, Sebastian were all incredible servers at Rita's Taco house and the Beach house. They paid kind attention to our needs, had big smiles and were just enjoyable to be around.
7) Manuel at Compass bar is a master mixologist and made wonderful craft drinks!
8) Our favorite spot was the adult pool area. The view was scenic with a private bar area, towels always available, and lounge chairs immersed in the water. Very relaxing.
9) We thought all the food was delicious but probably our favorite places were Rita's and Frank and Lola's. Little to no wait to get our food each evening.
10) Kids ordered room service a couple of times. A little bit of a wait on one occasion but overall not bad.
11) We booked with Edgar of Monkey Tours for an excursion that included, ATVs, ziplining, horseback riding, and the best part - swimming in the cenotes (an absolute must)! It was a half day excursion that included a light lunch and drink at the end. Great day and thank you Edgar!

Overall a wonderful trip! Aside from the grave disappointments of the changes to our membership due to the split between Exotic and Prestige - we had a great time and it is due to the fact that there are really amazing staff working at this resort! We thank you sincerely for your warmth and hospitality.

We were initially concerned about going to the resort since Hurricane Beryl had just passed over 5 days prior to our arrival but, I have to say, the resort staff had everything looking prestine with the small exception of a couple of the pools that had filtration problems initiated by the hurricane.

Our butler, Alberto, was amazing. He was very attentive to our needs and an overall great person to talk to.

Jesus, the resort PR employee, did an amazing job checking up on us and making sure we were happy.

Our 2 favorite bartenders, Alfredo and Gregorio, can make any drink you request (even ones to settle an upset stomach).

The restaurants were all fabulous and the staff at each restaurant were so accommodating.

The housekeeping services were excellent.

The beach was nice. There were some issues with seaweed in the beginning of our stay but, once they got it under control, it was really nice.

We look forward to returning to this resort soon!

Room tip: If you want a lounge chair by one of the main pools you need to get out there early.
