Mostly positive family vacation

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Jul 2024
This is our second visit to Margaritaville Riviera Cancun. We were here as a family of 5 celebrating our daughter's 16th birthday. Overall, it was a great trip due to our amazing butler (Carlos) and the other amazing staff. I will start with the cons of the resort and end this review on a positive note with the pros of the resort. Even though this review is long, I want to provide an honest and thorough perspective due to the fact that I have been a member since 2017 and have been to 9 different Prestige/Exotic resorts, some multiple times.
• First, I am writing as an Exotic Member. This is now different then being a Prestige member (which is what this resort will try to sell you). The two memberships used to be combined and there were good benefits, but since the separation between Exotic and Prestige, it has been a downhill spiral for members. In a nutshell, the experience has been regretful and confusing. We lost some of our privileges that we paid for when we signed up as a result of this split. For example, we were told we were not invited to the member's dinner but then they later called us and knocked on our door inviting us to the dinner.
• Cons:
1) When we first arrived the welcome was lukewarm. They typically welcome you
with a drink and popsicles for the kids. Nothing this time.
2) The resort did not seem as clean as in the past. For days, the lounge chairs by the pool near Rita's taco house had bird poop all over them. I waited to see if they would get cleaned but finally pointed them out to a worker after they had not been cleaned for a few days. It was only then came around to scrub the chairs. The same pool near Rita's had debris floating on top which was also not cleaned out. Towels were not always available at this pool either.
3) Work out room - very small (two treadmills, one bike, a few weights). The biggest issue here is they would not allow my 16 year old to work out even though she would accompanied by her mother or father. Made no sense to me since this is a family facility. Moreover, our daughter is an athlete and works out multiple times back home in our local gym. After I said something to our butler, he helped to facilitate a waiver that we signed which allowed our daughter to accompany us.
4) One of the spa employees - Dominique - was not as friendly. Not sure what was going on with her, but she should get feedback about trying to be more pleasant since she is the first person guests see when they are going to a spa to relax. It should not be stressful to have to interact with an employee who appears to be in a bad mood. Her tone and demeanor were not inviting.

• Pros:
1) First and foremost, our incredible butler, Carlos!! He was gentle, kind and went the extra mile to help make our experience better - from making arrangements for the sparkling wine to be sent to our room (even though it was supposed to already be there waiting upon our arrival as it is stated in our membership), to figuring out a way so our daughter could work out in the gym after initially being denied, to getting our son's ball that was stuck on the balcony of one of the other guest's room, and especially awesome was going above and beyond to decorate and make arrangements for our daughter's 16th birthday. Carlos was quick to respond when we needed something and did everything in his power to facilitate a wonderful vacation for our family. We also want to thank Alberto who also filled in as our butler when Carlos had a day off. Alberto was attentive and helpful. He also helped to make
2) Luzma - did a fantastic job cleaning our room on a daily basis and made sure we were replenished with towels and toiletries.
3) Bed and pillows were very comfortable!
4) The shower was amazing - good water pressure and plenty of hot water.
5) Carlos our server at Frank and Lola's was one of the best servers we've ever had. He remembered everything that we ordered and how we wanted it, his timing was perfect, and he was engaging. He is a good model of what hospitality should be like everywhere.
6) Our friends, Emilio, Aurelio, Antonio, Sebastian were all incredible servers at Rita's Taco house and the Beach house. They paid kind attention to our needs, had big smiles and were just enjoyable to be around.
7) Manuel at Compass bar is a master mixologist and made wonderful craft drinks!
8) Our favorite spot was the adult pool area. The view was scenic with a private bar area, towels always available, and lounge chairs immersed in the water. Very relaxing.
9) We thought all the food was delicious but probably our favorite places were Rita's and Frank and Lola's. Little to no wait to get our food each evening.
10) Kids ordered room service a couple of times. A little bit of a wait on one occasion but overall not bad.
11) We booked with Edgar of Monkey Tours for an excursion that included, ATVs, ziplining, horseback riding, and the best part - swimming in the cenotes (an absolute must)! It was a half day excursion that included a light lunch and drink at the end. Great day and thank you Edgar!

Overall a wonderful trip! Aside from the grave disappointments of the changes to our membership due to the split between Exotic and Prestige - we had a great time and it is due to the fact that there are really amazing staff working at this resort! We thank you sincerely for your warmth and hospitality.

We were initially concerned about going to the resort since Hurricane Beryl had just passed over 5 days prior to our arrival but, I have to say, the resort staff had everything looking prestine with the small exception of a couple of the pools that had filtration problems initiated by the hurricane.

Our butler, Alberto, was amazing. He was very attentive to our needs and an overall great person to talk to.

Jesus, the resort PR employee, did an amazing job checking up on us and making sure we were happy.

Our 2 favorite bartenders, Alfredo and Gregorio, can make any drink you request (even ones to settle an upset stomach).

The restaurants were all fabulous and the staff at each restaurant were so accommodating.

The housekeeping services were excellent.

The beach was nice. There were some issues with seaweed in the beginning of our stay but, once they got it under control, it was really nice.

We look forward to returning to this resort soon!

Room tip: If you want a lounge chair by one of the main pools you need to get out there early.

This resort is our favorite place to go. It is a small resort but the beach is beautiful and the service is amazing! Eduardo in the Boathouse Restaurant made us feel like family. This is our second trip there and it is was nice to see the same employees still there. The smiling face of Moises in Joe Merchant everyday for my morning coffee was the perfect way to start the day. The mixologist, Manuel at the compass bar was not only the best bartender on the resort, but he was willing to teach us and experiment with drinks to make our stay so much fun. This is an amazing place and we cannot wait to go back!

We got married here last year , but I just realized that I never wrote a review. The biggest thing I want to say, is that they were NOT careful with allergies and almost killed one of our guests. In our planning and pre-meetings, we made it very clear that some of our guests had shellfish allergies and I was worried about having any shellfish. They assured me over and over this would not be an issue- we suggested using different colored trays to differentiate between food, they agreed to this and told me all staff would be well informed of what they were passing out; this did not happen. For example, when asked what was on their tray, the waiters would say things like “try it and find out!”. At the cocktail hour, one of the guests informed the waiter he could not eat shellfish, so the waiter went and got a different tray and brought it to the guest, the guest asked what it was and the waiter told him “spinach”, the guest confirmed “no shellfish?” and the waiter agreed. After taking a bite, the guest realized there was scallop hidden under the spinach. At this point, his throat started closing, and we starting look for the event staff to call a doctor, and NONE of the THREE staff assigned to the wedding were anywhere to be found. After about 15 minutes, the staff eventually came back to the wedding (while my other guests were running around the resort looking for help) and helped call a dr (which the resort later tried to charge the guest for!). The staff kept saying “we only stepped away for a few minutes!”, but in my opinion it was unacceptable for all 3 to be gone at the same time. The staff was not concerned at the grave error they had made, and continuously brushed it off when we tried to bring up our concerns.

Moving on from the allergies, here are some other things that went wrong: they tried to start the wedding without the groom, the officiant, and the groom’s family (they were waiting in the groom’s suite, like the staff had told them to). If my sister wouldn’t have intervened, my husband would have seen me and my dress before walking down the aisle.

They also lost my veil and didn’t even notice until I asked about it- thankfully they found it 20 minutes before the ceremony, but I did not get to have it on in some of the pictures that I wanted.

Also, during our welcome event, we had requested (and paid for) beach Olympics (which is advertised in their wedding events), but when we asked to start the games they said “well if you tell us some games you want to do”.

The resort itself was fine: it was pretty and we enjoyed the events each night. The food was decent (not as good as advertised IMO) , but some of the restaurants are only open 1-2 days a week and only for a few hours, so your restaurant choices are very limited.

Above all else, I want anyone with ALLERGIES to AVOID THIS RESORT!!!! Also, I would suggest not getting married here because the planning process is much smoother than the actual wedding

I returned from Riviera Cancun yesterday and couldn’t wait to post my review! I have never reviewed a resort before, but this place deserves a post. Originally I was skeptical because the pricing for all inclusive seemed a bit too good to be true. I expected the food to be mediocre at best, the room to be decent and the staff to be average.
Boy was I wrong!! The food was incredible with a nice variety of offerings. My favorite restaurant is a four way tie between all four restaurants. The room was cute and clean with a fluffy comfy bed and it stayed nice and cool mid July. The staff is the showstopper of the resort. Everyone was kind and helpful without being over the top. Jesus, Alfredo and Alexander were absolutely fantastic. I miss them already 😢 There’s also fun things happening everyday. We painted pottery, we danced to a live band and had dinner poolside on Mexican night. We also won movie trivia at the tiki bar!! There were other activities offered multiple times daily.
The resort grounds were very well maintained and so charming. It felt nostalgic of my childhood when resorts had character. It just made you want to stay forever.
My husband and I went to another Cancun resort 2 months ago. It was a 5 star luxury resort and 5 times more expensive than Riviera Cancun. There is hands down, no comparison. I would choose this resort any day regardless of the price. I’m currently booking another trip because the thought of not being there again just makes me sad. Thanks again to the staff, especially Jesus, Alfredo, and Alexander. See you soon!!

Room tip: Frank and Lola’s and Latino are great dinner options but be sure to make reservations to secure your time slot
