I loved this place.
Passionate staff, who love the birds and are so great with the public.
The flying show at 2pm is amazing, and to hold a bird of prey is an unforgettable experience.
A must for any New Zealander remotely interested in bird conservation

Anyone that visits NZ and loves birds must put this on the itinerary. The couple running it are dedicated and very passionate with what they do. It is very well set out and offers a great learning experience. The free flight demonstration is delightful and interactive. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, they are an amazing couple and we congratulate them and thank them for their contribution towards conservation and rehabilitation. NZ is very fortunate to have you looking after the welfare of their birds and the environment.
Thank-you and good luck with the new venture and relocation of Wingspan.
Hope to see you on KI one day.

We really enjoy the flight demos at 2pm where the birds will decide how much they'll cooperate with the staff in return for the birds' entertainment and nibbles. As they are exercising outside without restraints, sometimes they decide to chase something else in the area.
This was our second visit, we booked a behind-the-scenes (entry cost per person in your group + $100) where one of the staff took us into the little room which is the "heart", ie where eggs are incubated, chicks reared, food prepared, research done etc, and made it simple by explaining the purpose of things in the room and a show-and-tell of the specimen drawers. Topped off by visiting the "poster girl" Whisper (ruru/morepork) inside her enclosure where she was bribed into perching on our wrists.
BtS must be booked in advance, and are kept intimate by small numbers. Questions (even silly ones) and photos greatly encouraged. You'd get different things at different times of year, email Wingspan for recommendations.

Hawks, Falcons, Owls up close and personal. A lovely introduction to New Zealand predator birds and those who care for them. The show was very educational and enjoyed by all.
