Stayed at Vasco for 8 nights. Emailed hotel before arrival asking about sea view rooms but didn't receive a reply. Had a street view room but this was fine. Large pool and lovely sunbathing area. Breakfast was good with plenty of variety which was always hot-even proper bacon. Went to hotel bar for happy hour and all 3 waiters in there were excellent - very friendly and informative. They were a credit to the hotel. Great hotel! Fantastic resort! We will definitely be back. Thank you Vasco.

We visited as a couple in August 2018. The hotel was apparently the first beach hotel to open in the Algarve so its design and architecture reflects that sort of 1960's look and feel. The reception area and common areas are done in a dark wood effect with lots of recognition of DaGama in evidence. We were checked in quickly and efficiently by a friendly receptionist, in fact it's fair to say that all of the staff were friendly and attentive. We had booked a sea view room and ended up on the third floor. No question that we had a sea view - but I hadn't appreciated quite how far away the se would be. The hotel is right on the beach - it's just that the beach is huge and so the sea still felt as if it was quite a way off. To add to that the beach is criss-crossed with boardwalks with lots of seafood restaurants. There's a fair walk to get to the restaurants and the extensive sunbathing area starts beyond that. The hotel has a private boardwalk to take you to the beach.

Our balcony was a bit disappointing - it had a fairly high concrete wall so when you sat down, you didn't really see anything. The balcony also had the air conditioning unit sitting at a low level and as a result the noise and the draft from the unit made the balcony a bit unwelcoming - we didn't use it much at all. The AC is free which is good, although it is a bit noisy. There's also a free safe in the room.

The room was clean with a regular maid service. There's a handy little fridge in the room - although it is very small with limited capacity. There's also a flat screen TV with lots of channels in many different languages, including a good few English language channels. The bathroom was also clean, with a bath/shower combination and free toiletries and a hairdryer.

The hotel has a nice big pool as well as a children's pool. There's lots of sun beds and we never had a problem finding one at any time of day. There's a snack bar by the pool that does the usual range of drinks and also sandwiches, toasties and some seafood. We were bed and breakfast and the restaurant has a distinctly canteen feel about it. There were lots of people falling over each other to make toast, get juice and get coffee. There was a good range of cooked breakfast too and it was pretty decent. We had one dinner at the hotel during our stay. Again, it was a buffet service and I wasn't that impressed with the choice on offer. As you often find with buffet food, the meal was fairly tepid. It was also expensive - 30 Euros each which was more expensive than local restaurants, with a much poorer experience. The hotel also has free wi-fi but I struggled to get it to work during my stay. It connected easily but the logon screens to allow you complete the connection often failed to appear, meaning that although you were connected, you couldn't actually do anything! Entertainment was every night, and very much traditional Portuguese style. There's a nice terrace next to the bar which is good for having drinks in the evening. There are also nice gardens, a children's play area, tennis courts and crazy golf.

The hotel will allow you to charge to your room. Certainly when I did it they didn't ask for a credit card impression first.

The hotel is situated towards the end of the town, but there are lots of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. There's also a few shops and a little supermarket nearby.

We had a nice break - we got what we were looking for from the hotel which was great. The hotel didnt feel too busy and the guests were from lots of different nationailities - not that many Brits either (speaking as a Brit).

Holiday with four grownup children and the girlfriends of three eldest, nine of us in all. We had four rooms, three doubles and a superiour double with extra bed for thirteen year old. Was a little worried about how the room would be laid out with the extra bed, as my daughter obviously wanted some privacy. But it was really good, the room was divided into hall, bathroom, dressing area with huge wardrobe where the extra full size single bed was situated and bedroom area, with fridge, dressing table easy chair and our bed.
I'd read some Tripadviser reviews stating 'dated decor', and 'in need of upgrade', and I'd have to agree with these regarding some of the rooms we had. However, I'd also agree with the fact that they were very clean(cleaned daily by very diligent housekeeping staff), spaceous, very comfy beds and good air conditioning.
We all met up in the evening at the bar ar happy hour(6-7 when we were there) for great cocktails with hilarious bar staff, well worth getting to know. Before heading out to eat. Plenty of nice places to eat within easy walking distance of the hotel. We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was really good, plenty of choice for everyone, replenished right up to 10.30 when it finished and plenty of room, even for a big group to sit together.
The beach, right off the new wooden walkway crisscrossing the front, is beautiful, with parasol/sunbed areas and areas for people who've brought their own blankets etc. The sea was a bit choppy with lots of seaweed, which isn't to my taste, but the young people swam, hired a pedalo/slide and went out to the inflatable obstacle course which was out to sea five minutes up the beach.
The pool area at the hotel was so nice, that's where we spent most time. Plenty of nice sunbeds at all times. I also spent time reading and relaxing in the gardens and comunal living room.
Wifi was a bit patchy, which is a problem if your under 25! And two of our rooms were at the front of the hotel which have very narrow balconies and the hotel opposite had noisy pool games/loud music during the day. Front rooms have nicer views and balconies.
Montegordo itself is very nice, feels safe, suprisingly lively without being clubby. Along the front at midnight there are market stalls, fair rides, horse and cart rides with families/young children enjoying the cooler night air. Definitely a resort which is predominantly Portuguese, but didn't have any language issues in shops/restaurants.
Worth catching a local bus to Villa Real five minutes towards Spain, where you can see Spain across the water, and has much nicer shops than Montegordo, which tends to be all inflatables and flip flops. Bus driver we had was comically rude though!

Our first visit here and we were expecting Monte Gordo to be an extremely sleepy little town, however we were pleasantly surprised that, while it wasn’t as lively as somewhere like Faro, it certainly had some life. Plenty of bars and restaurants, plenty of sea front market stalls in the evenings and play areas to keep kids happy. It is mainly a Portuguese resort (one restaurant owner said that 90% of tourists are from Portugal) but that suited us just fine and every single person we interacted was friendly and helpful.
There appears to be some disgruntlement about the newly constructed boardwalk from regular visitors, however, as first time visitors, we found it to be a lovely and unique feature of the town, great for a late evening stroll or an early morning run. The boardwalk itself is now finished, I would guess there is only a few weeks left to complete the remaining seafront restaurants / bars and toilet blocks. There is some work ongoing we were never aware of any noise or disruption.
Although the transfer (with Jet2) to Monte Gordo is almost an hour it was pleasant enough as both legs of the journey were in small air conditioned vehicles with only a couple of stops along the way rather than on coaches.
The Hotel Vasco da Gama is traditional with plenty of character. It isn’t modern by any means but we found our inland facing room to be perfectly suitable, with comfy beds, good air conditioning, a handy small fridge, a free safe, a powerful shower and a nice quiet balcony. Our room, as with every part of the hotel, was perfectly spotless and the cleaning staff were always quick yet effective.
The main pool (there is also a small children’s pool) was simple but large enough to swim a few lengths or play around (although the no inflatable mattress was a bit disappointing for us). The beds around the pool were plentiful and we never had any issue with acquiring one at any point in the day. You can hire pool/beach towels from the hotel for a €10 deposit. On the days we went to the beach the walkway straight from the hotel to the beach loungers (€12 for two loungers and an umbrella for the day) was ideal. The sea itself was, as to be expected, not warm, but was very shallow for a long way out and didn’t have big waves (while we were there) or appear to have strong currents so probably ideal for families (who can brave the cold!).
The only meal we ate at the hotel was breakfast and we always found it to be of good quality and plentiful. Everything was always restocked right up to the final minutes of service by the quietly efficient and discreet restaurant staff. The rest of the time we ate at some of the many different restaurants around the town (using TripAdvisor as a guide) and enjoyed every meal we had.
Overall, a very pleasant hotel, a lovely little town and somewhere we would definitely recommend and come back to.

Second visit to the Vasco with friends. Stayed mid May this time, very hot weather so that a room on the road side of hotel was ideal, tended to stay cool. Majority of guest were old people (Round about April time - as seen on previous visits to Monte Gordo groups of young athletes are accommodated in the resort hotels )
The Vasco is ideally situated on beach. A bus stop outside give easy access to Vilareal and ferry to Spain, although restricted time table out of high season.
The grounds on beach side of hotel are extensive with a variety of different areas for relaxation, eg round pools, tabled terrace with umbrellas, grassy areas with sunbeds under palm trees, tennis courts, children's play area etc. Also direct access to beach , and hotel bar on new boardwalk.
.
As regards the food, I have found breakfast one of the best in Monte Gordo, Eggs are cooked next to food tables, and there are 3 types of bacon. As regards comments on the hottest of food I have found it ok. It depends on when you go in, I usually take breakfast shortly after dining room open. Even on the hotplates food cools down and food cannot be cooked to order with so many to serve.
I was a little concerned that there was no secure area to store luggage after check out while waiting for airport transfer. Other hotels have a locked luggage room, or keep them behind the hotel desk. At Vasco luggage storage is in a public room, no security.
, The age of the Vasco gives it character and is good for a quiet relaxing holiday

Room Tip: Room on roadside in very hot weather.
