It was a beautiful day and we were lucky enough to wander down to the beach where there were 4 sea lions. The view from the lighthouse is amazing and the different colour blues in the sea were just wow!
The view from the lighthouse is terrific. There is a 300m walk from the car park. Huge SeaLions scrapping on the beach. Freezing cold strong wind and on the day we visited the road had been freshly covered with gravel, large chunky thick layer of sharp gravel. Not the best for tyres. Drive slow and trip is worthwhile.
Very little to view but a Wild majestic and remote place to spend time soaking up the sheer vastness of the ocean, even in bad weather!
part of our south coast adventure took us to this lighthouse. it was short and stout which suits the rugged coastline. during our walk down we saw 3 sea lions bathing in the sun. we made sure not to get too close to them, but they seemed content with people walking past them.
Access to Waipapa Point is down a few kms of gravel road (it's signposted from the main highway), and there's a Dept of Conservation car park and toilet at the end of the road. We had turned up expecting to see an emtpy beach but were rewarded with views of seals just a 10min walk north along the beach (they were just about visible from the lighthouse), three of which were putting on a show by fighting. We had the place completely to ourselves.
Beautiful place with such a rugged coastline. Seals back into the cold weather and swimming.
Accessible toilet though is NOT accessible as step up into toilet is very high.
