“A Canadian Brigadoon...”

...is how the Muskoka region is described by local writer Sarah Neal in the preface to her novel, "Lynnehurst." It felt like that for these Americans visiting for the first time, and Hollyhock Cottage was a big part of why it did. A perfect place to stay. We would have liked to be here much longer, and would absolutely rent again.

The cottage is small and snug. It has been beautifully renovated and decorated. The black-and-white photos throughout the home are of three generations of the owner's family, including her great-grandfather, who was an Ojibway-speaking priest in northern Ontario. The cottage was spotlessly clean and the kitchen was well-furnished. The shower was hot. There is a lovely stone fireplace, a gas grill, and a steel fire pit. Jen and Yogi, the gracious owners, left us flowers, eggs, a loaf of their own bread, a map of the village, a basket of flyers for attractions in the region, and the two volumes of the history of Rosseau (read them!). There is wi-fi but no television set (and it would be a terrible waste to spend your time here tuned in to the world back home). The cottage is a short walk from everything in this very small village, including the marina, public beach, general store, ice cream shop, and restaurants.

Tips about the area: in the village, only the Bakery (a very-limited variety store, actually) and the Crossroads Grill stay open late; the closest gas is in Bent River (10-15 minutes); bring your groceries with you if you're on a budget--the charming general store is well-stocked but very, very pricey; you'll find a Metro supermarket, mall, Home Depot, etc., 40 minutes away in Huntsville. The village beach is accessible 24/7. For a more secluded swim and a beautiful view of the lake over the Rosseau Falls, visit Four Mile Point Park on Rosseau Lake Rd. #3, off Highway 141 (<10 minutes). Drop in at Church of the Redeemer on Friday mornings from 9-11 for coffee, muffins, and conversation with some of the lovely people who live here. Everyone we met in Rosseau during our five-day stay was very friendly and helpful.
