My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon in February 2018. It's now May and when people still ask me how my honeymoon was, my reply is almost always "it was perfect for us". Eleuthera and the Pink Sand Cottage were exactly what we wanted: a beautiful, affordable, quiet, private place as close to the water as you can get.
In my opinion, staying in North Palmetto was the perfect location - especially for first-timers on Eleuthera like us. It's a great location next to some beautiful beaches (most of which are mentioned in other review, so I won't exhaust the list here).
If you're a fan of fresh seafood, do as others say and drive by the harbors in some of the settlements around 2 - 3 pm and see if you can buy a fresh catch from the locals. We picked up a full tuna in Rock Sound (caught that day and cleaned in front of us for $10) and grilled it to go with some fresh fruit and vegetables we picked up at the nearby Island Farm (highly recommend visiting here for some fresh eats).
We spent most of our days out exploring the beautiful island and felt like we had paradise to ourselves quite often. Our favorite day there was the full day we spent at the Cottage hanging out on what felt like miles of our own private beach, eating local food, drinking Kalik beer and just enjoying the serenity.
The Atlantic side (where the Cottage is located) was quite windy, but that felt nice on hot days and made the star-lit nights feel like some sort of dream when you stepped outside in the middle of the night to walk along the ocean. I've never experienced anything quite that beautiful with just one other person.
Ken (owner) was very responsive to questions easy to work with overall. He recommended a great guy for an affordable car rental as well.
We plan to come back for anniversaries and would recommend this great little place for any couple looking to get away from the constant hustle and bustle of the day-to-day grind.
I'm giving this a 3 rating because of the beach which was the primary reason we booked this cottage, and that did not disappoint. We could walk forever on soft sand, looking at beautiful water. Nice porch to sit on and drink your morning coffee or evening drinks, and a deck to lounge on if you want to be up off the sand. That said, however, we were disappointed with many aspects of our stay.
While the cottage was spacious enough for 2 people, and was very clean - it is in need of some general maintenance and upkeep which did impact our time there. The ceiling fan over the bed was missing a pull chain to control the light so you either slept with the light on, or slept with the fan off - neither of which were good options. Cabinet door in the kitchen had a broken hinge so it neither shut or opened fully. Dryer and refrigerator are both in need of repair or more likely replacement - frig drips water from somewhere inside getting your items all wet and the dryer doesn't dry even after an hour for a small load. In spite of what we read when booking that wifi was available, the only internet is by really utilizing the cellphone in the unit as a hotspot - but when we arrived there was no money/time/data on the phone. The gracious housekeeper took care of that for us, but we had to use our own cellphone data for 2 days and pay the roaming fees until we were able to meet up with her. It would be nice to be able to unplug completely while away, but that is just not an option for many. The beach towels are quite thin, as are the musty pillows that need to be replaced.
The directions provided to us were not much help. They really should say that once you hit the sand 2 tracker on Banks Road, you keep going for "x" miles. We turned around because we thought we surely had missed it - and as night was approaching quickly, we were getting a little concerned. They also referenced buildings that have changed in color since they were written, and street signs are few are far between so we ended up just winging it. The book of restaurants in the cottage, as well as those mentioned in the "check-in" info needs to be updated as many were no longer in business. That is not a critical thing, but just goes along with the general lack of upkeep.
With just a little effort, this cottage could be turned back into the wonderful place that I'm sure it was when it first became available, and I have let the owner directly know of items in need of attention. I hope that this occurs, but until then, we would not return, nor would we recommend to any of our friends.
Overall, my experience at Pink Sands was wonderful. As everyone has already stated, this little cottage really is right on the beach. The water and beach were fantastic with little emerald swimming pockets dotting the coast line (for those who weren't comfortable with venturing further out). The grounds have two sundecks plus a shaded hammock closer to the cottage. Winds on the Atlantic side were usually stronger but you need only drive10 minutes to get to the calmer Carribean side. However, regardless of the wind, this beach is truly "incredible".
The cottage was small but very well equipped, clean and comfortable. The front deck provided a beautiful place so sit with a coffee and enjoy the morning sunrise. Everything you need to enjoy a tranquil beach vacation is at the cottage, including snorkeling gear and a wave board.
The island itself is rich in beauty and culture and it's highly recommended that you experience the many restaurants in and around town.
Word of warning, for those who have allergic reactions to bug bites prepare yourself prior to your trip. The "No-see-ums" didn't bother me as much as they did my girlfriend. Bring repellant with deet or as many people have told me, take Vitamin B complex for 30 days prior to your departure. This will definitely keep the little buggers off you. From what I understand, they are really only noticeable in the Spring and Summer months so those only prone to reactions may be bothered in the Winter months.
All in all this little gem of a place is worth visiting. Ken was extremely helpful with his driving directions from the airport and tips on where to buy groceries, where to go for dinner, car rentals etc. Reservation process was seamless and hassle free. One thing that really stood out were the people...incredibly friendly and helpful. I would definitely return.
Thanks again Ken and Adele
Overall our experience at the Pink Sand Cottage was exceptional. The location of this cottage is perfect. It is literally right on the beach (and the beach is beautiful). Lots of walking possibilities north and south on this beach. The cottage has pretty much everything you need, and the owner and on-site caretaker are always available if you have a problem or special request. This cottage is on town water, but it also has a working cistern, so water availability should never be a problem.
